Getting Enough Sleep

As simple as it sounds, I find that getting enough sleep does wonders for my stress levels and my productivity. Staying up late every night and "cramming" may have worked in grad school, but as a middle-aged adult with two small children, I need my sleep! How about you?

Essay Exams - Pros and Cons

I have always liked essay exams for higher level college courses. In my opinion, essays give a student a better opportunity to demonstrate his/her mastery of the material and the ability to apply what has been learned (as opposed to multiple choice and/or true/false exams). However, my grading is overwhelming! Grading essays and term papers seem to take over my life! I love the points made in this module...having students highlight or underline the key points of each answer. This technique seems to streamline the grading process, and also serves to reinforce the key concepts to the students, as well. Can't beat that! Cheryl

Never Enough Time!

I have read through most of the posts in this forum and I agree with so many of you. My personal issue is the obstacle of control. I often feel as if my school, students, and other external demands are in control of my time. I already make a to-do list, but I am also seeking other tips to better manage my time and to keep me in control of my job, my life, and my time! Thanks for reading. Cheryl

Missing classes due to work

I had a student who had missed several classes. Her excuse was that she has not been able to leave work and get on time, however she was willing to catch up. I asked her to have a meeting and discuss her questions and ways for her to catch up. She did not come to the meeting and she argued she had a unexpected problem at work. While I made it clear about the deadlines, seems that she does not know about them. She did not drop the class and she submitted a great final project, although it was not enough for her to pass the course. While she was an adult learner and assuming she knows about commitment (because she has worked for an important company for so many years), How do you communicate the idea of commitment to a class to an adult learner who has been out of school for some many years and yet she works in a very important company which requires a lot of commitment?

Lack of Guest Speakers

I am teaching a brand new Medical Assisting program in a community that as yet offers no jobs in the field. We are still trying to find extern sites for our 1st set of 2010 graduates. While I would love to have a prior graduate talk to my students about their success in the field, that obviously won't happen for awhile. In the meantime, what do you suggest? -Jeanne

I have a student that will smile and talk very nicely, but will conplain to the dean about staff. How to handle that. This student does it to many teachers

A student refuses to take careof a patient

A student left a patient's room and was hard to locate because she refused to take care of that patient. How can I stop that type of behavior

I teach clinicals for RN. Some of the students that are strong academicaly are sneaking around and do the minimal work to pass the clinicals. Hw can I make them stop it and make them give good nursing care for their patient?

Cheating and Technology

It just seems to me that with the progression of technology (text messaging and web enabled cell phones, mini laptops, PSP's, Play Stations, XBox etc.); it has become too easy for a student to squeak by and cheat. Even when they purchase these new computer/video games, they are encouraged to "find the cheat codes" to make the game easier, and in some cases they can not solve/complete the game without them. How do we reprogram these students to show them that there are no cheat codes in real life?

Establishing priorities in your life and letting others know where you are commig from and trying to include them in your life and your work can help to illiminate stress and build relationships.

In a busy life one can only do what one can do. However, good communications with schools, family, friends and associates can help not only maintain good relations but relieve stress.

My Space

Defining your space is critical. Others will try and "max" their space without regard to yours. A clasr understanding right off the bat will help develop mutual respect and a good relationship

There is never enough time!

The more I do the more it seams that I want to do. I have always had the problem of wanting to accomplish more than I have time to do.

Just like your students with the right amount of preperation you can be successful teaching anything.

Making Silent Student Open Up

I usually have small classes because I am at the end of the program so this is a luxury for me but i give them my personal and professional life story and ask that they do the same I find although painfull for some this helps them open up a great deal and I personaly know each and every student which helps me to be a more evective teacher.

I find that if you pin point a student who is having difficulty focusing, if you talk to him or her one on one and explain why that was importent to them and there career maybe throw a couple of real life examples out there they will start to be more attentive in class.

Review Syllabus

I find that if in the beginning of the first day of class you extensively review the syllabus show students page by page where to find the information they need to be successful in the class and what is expected of them I have a better success rate as a teacher.

Syllabus Key to instructor student expectations and CHOICES!

I find the course syllabus as the key to many of the discussions posted: late assignments turned in, student motivation, etc. I am a student and found one of the best syllabus seen allowed adult student choices in work with each one have a point value and out of all the choices you needed 40 points to complete the work. The student could choose to write papers, find 5 websites that supported the material discussed, post online discussion similar to what we are doing here. The key was the student had a choice and each choice empowered the adult learner by choosing his or her best way of learning. I have also had a syllabus that was 35 pages long and took me two days to determine the expectations and when and what was due to the Professor.
