Selecting course textbooks

It's very important to also make sure you are using the correct editions and you are staying up to date on them. I remember in college buying books that weren't the updated edition to save money and it never paid off.

Motivator

Becoming a motivator is one of the most critical aspects of being a teacher. It gets the kids excited for what they are preparing for and learning and also gets them to understand and respect what you do for them.

Memory Retention

I find that allowing the students to prepare a 3x5 card with notes for a test works well. By studying enough to prepare the 3x5 card, they usually end up not needing them because they have retained the information.

I find that it is important to keep students involved in the learning process. During lecture, i still try to have at least one exercise that they can et involved and feel as though they are actually part of and in charge of their learning experience.

It has been difficult teaching students that cannot read and write well. They often try to cover up the dificiency and are not confident in their studies.

Music is not usually allowed in our classrooms. However, I find it motivates them during cleah-up at the end of class, and it gives them something to look forward to and they are relaxed when it plays.

Delivering my lecture

I like to walk around the class room when I lecture. It keeps me relaxed and it helps me see if everyone is listening. I try to get everyone involved by asking question about the topic of the day.

It is usually a challenge the first class day to establish yourself as the "manager" of the course, when their are various student's that have already, set their opinions of either fellow peers, previous intructors and bunch themselves into these cohorts. What are some techniques you have learned to either heal the group(s) without offending anyone or starting a debate, but standing your ground on classroom behavior and respect for others.

I think its a good idea to refrase student questions-this not only can correct grammer if needed, but also lets you know if you actually understand what the student is questioning.

Due to the fact that students have many learning styles it is important to incorporate many uses of these in the classroom. Each student should feel as though they are getting the information in a way that they can understand easily.

Meeting the class for the first time.

I teach in the medical field. When I meet my first class, I give them a little information about myself and why I got into this profession. I then ask each one of my new students to explain a little about themselves and why they chose this particular field to go into. It seems to break the ice and gives other students a chance to ask each other questions.

I like groups becasue they afford the students the ability to learn from each other. Often this is a better interaction than with an instructor.

Learnign needs

I feel that giving extra attentionis not the proper way to go about this. It will often alienate other students and make then foee as if favoritism is abound. What I wouuld normally do is ask the student to meet with me on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to complete an overview of the mateial presented thus far.
