Planning and Preparation

Preparing for a class is essential it gives me confidence.

Communication

I have in the past 4 - 5 terms have found out just how important it is to openly communicate with students about numerous of this; not only pertaining to the subject at hand but about things in their city, county, state, country.

Developing as an Instructor

I am returning to the classroom after 10 years in the clinical area. I am now focus on developing as a competent instructor by using model, manager and motivator techniques

Any suggestions for class activities

I have three and a half hours of lecture every other day. I try to involve the students but I have exhausted all my resources. Does anyone have any suggestions for games or activites?

The Syllabus

I make it appoint to go over the syllabus in the beginning of the course. This helps set the tone for the course and lays out expectations. I feel this practice is very helpful to teacher and student. As a result, there are fewer problems along the way.

ID

Dettermining which students may have a learning challange can sometime be the biggest hurdle.

Projects

It's importaint to plan projects carefully so, the student feals like they have gotton something more than just a grade.

Group work

If learning groups are too large, some students tend to "ride the coat-tails" of the more dedicated students.

Real Communication

True communication is listening, not speeking.

students getting bored

I notice most often 15 minutes tends to be the max that my students can keep focused on a lecture . . having a proper plan for that and activity ready is a great way to go.

notecard activities

creating a notecard activity where the students write about themselves gives you a nice learning fact about the student and saves them from having to speak in front of the class if they're nervous on the first day.

Selecting course textbooks

It's very important to also make sure you are using the correct editions and you are staying up to date on them. I remember in college buying books that weren't the updated edition to save money and it never paid off.

Motivator

Becoming a motivator is one of the most critical aspects of being a teacher. It gets the kids excited for what they are preparing for and learning and also gets them to understand and respect what you do for them.

Memory Retention

I find that allowing the students to prepare a 3x5 card with notes for a test works well. By studying enough to prepare the 3x5 card, they usually end up not needing them because they have retained the information.

Learning Activities

I find that it is important to keep students involved in the learning process. During lecture, i still try to have at least one exercise that they can et involved and feel as though they are actually part of and in charge of their learning experience.

Diabilities

What do you do when the disabilities are slowing down the rest of the class?

Literacy

It has been difficult teaching students that cannot read and write well. They often try to cover up the dificiency and are not confident in their studies.

Music in a classroom

Music is not usually allowed in our classrooms. However, I find it motivates them during cleah-up at the end of class, and it gives them something to look forward to and they are relaxed when it plays.

Monitoring

Monitoring is a good way to let every student know they are valued in your class. It can help bring out some of the more shy students.

Engaging students

I always try to tell students that they have the knowledge to do the next activity and it will be easy for them. I am amazed at how they react that it IS actually easy for them.
