ED117 - Teaching Gen Y Students

I appreciated the opportunity this course provided to reflect on the characteristics of the 4 generations (veterans, baby boomers, Gen X and Gen Y) and apply some strategies that can be incorporated into my instructional planning. I really liked the concept of the "performance contract" to help the students take more ownership of their learning and setting goals for more effective study habits and class participation. Knowing that relevancy is VITAL to Gen Y students helped to reinforce my use of clinical experience and giving context to why they need to know this info/lesson for their career during my instruction.… >>>

Make sure to acknowledge students in the hallway

One of my best practices is to always acknowledge every student positively. It is a small but significant action.

retention

We are always trying to find new ways of improving retention - there is no one way that works for everyone.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Great course !!!

First Class Customer Service

I have been working very hard with my team to foster first class customer service by coaching and guiding to never give up on a student.  There are many times that instructors form biases against students due to past student behaviors or perceived beliefs of students.  These biases come out in every little thing we do and cause students to think that if the instructor does not believe in them, they must not be good enough and will never succeed.  I tell my instructors that I never give up on my students.  As Director of Education, I will continue to… >>>

I encourage dialogue with your colleagues

I think discussing best practices with your colleagues is very beneficial to our growth as instructors.  I like to bounce off my ideas and experiences with their own ideas and experiences.

I am going to focus in on my writing skills

I plan to sharpen my communication skills to better retain my students.

application of timely retention practices

The accredeted institution which I work for is continually addressing new ways to improve retention.  I plan to share this information with other facutly, as well as admissions and other staff, and will certainly recommend this course to them.  I found it to be a practical and important way to address student's perspective of the roadblocks they often face in completing their training programs.

Mentoring

I agree mentoring students can be very effective.

Internal Customers

Its an interesting fact , that not only the students are our internal customers but the other departments as well. Fostering  open communication and working with all departments on campus is essential to the students and campus success.

First-Class Customer Service

Students are hard to assess sometimes.  Coming to school may be a full time job for them, or they may have a full time job already & coming to school is extra.  I try to be sensitive to what students may/may not be going through with in their lives.  I always try to stay positive & show that I care.  I know a smile makes me feel better.  I always try to give a smile to each 'customer' in which I come in contact.

Retention Best Practices

I think one of the most important factors for retaining students through graduation and getting hired is to demonstrate care of student success.  Instill in the students that the Instructor is there to help them find the path to success, not by doing it for them, but helping them navigate the path of life to success. I will give the students examples of coping strategies, and ideas of how to problem solve situations to help them find solutions and help show by example how to communicate professionally and effectively.

Magnificent online experience

This online course is magnificent. A lot of good advice, useful examples, summarized conclusions in order, from basics to implementation.

Varied Reaons why

As an Instructor, I see the reason someone takes a class, Is for the gaining of knowledge to get employment, or better their position in the their current job. When I step back and look closer, I see people taking classes as way out of getting employment. At times our system rewards those who are good at using flawed loop holes. These individuals can cause havoc with the groups that do want to learn and use the knowledge. Overall the ones that take the knowledge and succeed make my job very rewarding.

Making Strides

I have been faced over the last several months with delivering a curriculum that is technically challenging.  The curiculum has caused the students to be concerned and nervous, and word of some of these struggles has affected our enrollments.

I have worked diligently to ensure positive outomes through coaching, mentoring, support and relaying rel world examples in the for of stories and anectodes, as well as humor to engage the students and increase the opportuity for rmaterial retention and learning.

Though the department continues to struggle in the face of declining enrollments, and my tenure within this department may be… >>>

Great experience

I just want to share my impression regarding this training. As an Admissions Director at my university I have very clear that customer service is the key and most important aspect of my department. I'm pretty sure this course will help me a lot on my career, and to do my job in the right way and the best of all, inspire my team. I had learned a lot and I will keep all the material beside my desk. Thanks for the opportunity!

Career focused training

I've seen the importance behind a Career focused education. In letting students know
about the career they are training for from the beginning and throughout, there
is truly a better chance for retention, completion and job placement.
