negativity

Now I know it takes 11 positive people to overcome 1 negative person. This just shows how powerful negativity is to ruin someone's day. From now on, it is nice to be always positive.

Retention

Retention is not only for the instructor to be concerned about,it is for the whole staff to be concerned about.

Retention

A successful college not only enrolls quality students but also retains those students.  As an instructor, I have a good retention rate with my students.  I feel that I am approachable and easy to talk to-I keep a open door policy with my students and am always willing to answer any questions or help them...even after hours.

Retention 101

This course had very valid points.

Invention with timing

I believe timing is everything. By having instructors being aware of student attendance and academic progress, attrition can be avoided. An intervention can be put in place to help the student be less stressed. If attendance is the issue we need to find the unlying cause. The answer may be as simple as arranging carpooling for the student. When it is noticed early tutoring can be arranged to help the student get organized with class and be taught study tips. A lot of the time these inventions is all it takes to help the student feel less stressed or overwhlemed.… >>>

The importance of the Placement department.

Our Placement departmen does an awesome job with the placing of students on their externship and helping them find jobs. I would like to see more integration of this progress throughout the program. We put the emphasis on this during the Senior phase. I think after the suggestions and ideas shown in this topic, I would like to see more used at our institution.

Our employers take the majority of our students for an externship. This gives both the employer and student an opportunity to see if they would be a good fit. The majority of our students do get… >>>

Areas that have worked for our school.

Our Admission Director has an on going relationship with all our students. We are a small college and faculity reports concerns and issues immediately.  As a result of the this retention especially with academics and attendance is addressed quickly. Tutoring is free at our college and students are reminded that it is available. We arrange car pooling for our students when needed.

We also use rewards and certificates for honor and merit roll. We are a clock hour school so perfect attendance is recognized every four weeks. The students look forward to receive these recognitions. We have community resources come… >>>

Great coures had alot of fun doing this one

The Power of Vision

As a vocational nurse instructor, the concept of "The Power of Vision" resonated with me. I have found that many students have life-changing aspirations but do not persist in reaching for their goal. The segment on helping students to develop vision was very beneficial. I have already used the vision form template that was provided. Hopefully, it will help my students picture their goal and help them focus on the steps they need to take to reach that goal.

Retention of the Student

Often times when I have students in my classes or in clinic, and they tell me personal things, in the past I have often felt this is something I don't need to know about. Its hard to know when it is ok to step in and be a counselor, and when to sit back and say nothing at all. It seems to me that the older students (those in their 30's and 40's) are better capable of handling their personal issues then the younger students (late teens to twenty something). These younger students want to expound on their troubles more,… >>>

Ambassadors and buddies

I value the ideas about ambassadors and buddies to help transition new students into the academic environment. I feel that peers that have been invloved withtraining for ahwil can really make the new students feel at home and ease them in to a new learning experience.

Best Practices to Enhance Student Retention

This course has some GREAT take aways! I love the concept of ATTENTION = RETENTION! Two of my favorite books are "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and "Emotional Intelligence." I could see a lot of the principles from these books woven into this course with useful strategies of how to apply them!
