Veterans Working on Communication Skills to Effectively Translate Related Skills

I really enjoyed this first section of "Supporting Veterans in Becoming Gainfully Employed."  I work with a lot of Veterans at my institution, and I often help them craft their resumes to a civilian style.  Often times I sit down and speak with them about their military skills and how they can transfer these skills to a certain civilian position in which they are interested.  Once I get them on the same page with me they understand that they can definitely market themselves well for certain positions based on their related experience they gained in the military.  It's all about… >>>

I always tell my students " Its not who you know but who knows you."

Network, volunteer and get yourself out there. Tell everyone you know that you will be graduating soon and will be looking for a job in your field. Everyone wants to help a new graduate. Get to know your teachers, the University staff and your classmates.

If a job opening comes their way they will remember you!

New Tools!

I am very eager to start encouraging our student body & alumni to use these amazing new tools to advertise themselves. I know it will make the difference in their being placed!

Customer service

I learned new ways to connect with students/alumni. I do feel no matter which forum you choose, customer service is the key to success!

Placement

Placements are another way of confirming that the training that the student has received from your school was beneficial to the student in obtaining employment in their selected field.

Veteran skills

Did you know that there are over 3 million jobs that are open and available but corporate America can't find skilled workers to fill them?  To me, that is the primary mission of all of us that work with veterans in higher education or career services . . . to help prepare the veteran to apply his vast skill learned in military service to those positions in demand in corporate America.  As our military exit active duty to make the transition, we need to help the veteran think outside of his or her comfort zone to pursue employment in areas… >>>

Virtual Career Fairs

Have you considered using a virtual career fair to either help veterans make the transition from military to civilian life or to hire employees for your company?  Once you get beyond the idea that you are going to talk with avatars, the utility of a virtual career fair is huge.  Usually the virtual career fair experience simulates the look of an actual job fair.  The exhibit halls usually have booths set up for each employer.  You can visit employeer booths and communicate directly with company reps through text, audio, or video chats.  Additionally, link are usually available to pull up… >>>

Making the transition

Military transition into civilian life is fraught with uncertainty and sometimes confusion on the part of the veteran.  Leaving the relative "safety" of the military causes the veteran to enter a world where there almost too many choices.  Key advice to the veteran is that they need to be confident in their skills learned in the military and that they need to practice explaining to others their military background in civilian terms.  Getting hired in corporate America requires the Veteran and the civilian HR Manager to meet halfway - the veteran helps to translate his military experience into terms that… >>>

New Tool Helps Jobseekers Leverage Social Media to Find Jobs

Today’s Job seekers have never been more empowered as they are today. The sheer amount of tools, advice and sites they have at their disposal is large. This is especially true when it comes to using social networking sites like Facebook and Linkedin.

Although each of these sites are used for different purposes (personal vs professional), they do have something in common to aid the job search. They both tell jobseekers what company their friends currently work at. A relatively new tool called Jobs With Friends helps jobseekers leverage that important data so they can more easily get referred.

Career Services

The career services department is a great selling point for the Admissions department. Career services assist graduates to search for employment in their career of choice. Career services will assist in interview preparation, resume writing and interview attire. Graduates benefit a lot from this resource since it gives them a better opportunity of finding employment.

Supporting Veterans in Becoming Gainfully Employed

The Post-9/11 GI Bill has paid for nearly 1 million veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to go to school at a cost of about $30 billion since 2009. With an influx of over one million more veterans projected to enter higher education in the next several years, institutions should be prepared to serve veteran students. Military veterans represent a unique type of non-traditional student who must overcome distinctive challenges to reintegrate into the civilian workforce yet many employees never have special training to serve this population.

3 Key Ideas for Improving Graduate Employment Outcomes

Prospective students, parents and policy makers want to know if their investment in higher education will produce a return and they are looking at graduate employment outcomes (placement) for the answer. As institutions consider how to continuously improve graduate employment outcomes, 3 key ideas to keep in mind are shared below:

  1. Rethink Career Services – Rather than thinking of Career Services as a department or the “back-end” of a process for preparing students to enter the workforce, rethink career services as a systemic set of strategically designed interventions woven into the fabric of the institution.  How might “career services”

The End of the Resume: Innovation Hub [Podcast]

There is a rising belief from employers that the traditional resume isn't the best way to determine talent.  Many employers, particularly in the tech fields and in programming specifically, are using different means to source, recruit and hire talent.  These employers say there are other ways to determine the best indicators of talent and they are using other means to find talent - mainly the internet.  This brief conversation discusses this growing practice with an example and makes us all reconsider how recruiting, hiring, and consequently, career marketing will change in the future.
