I always tell my students " Its not who you know but who knows you."

Network, volunteer and get yourself out there. Tell everyone you know that you will be graduating soon and will be looking for a job in your field. Everyone wants to help a new graduate. Get to know your teachers, the University staff and your classmates.

If a job opening comes their way they will remember you!

Yes, this is great advice. I've made it a habit of visiting the new students in their classrooms. I  introduce myself, offer my services and encourage them to start networking. Get noticed, get hired.

I also explain that their externships should be treated as job interviews in disguise.
