EL 102

I feel like this will help me better cultivate good discussions and I am excited with having the best interactive experience in my classes.  I think this will have the very best interactive experiences.

Online teaching in the Covid-9 era

Now more than ever students need the support of faculty members who will guide and facilitate their learning. Students are scared, unable to process the daily realities discussed on the news, in some instances their family and as such will need instructional and technical support. In a time like this, online learning needs to ensure structural integrity, academic integrity, navigational simplicity, intellectual interactions and active learner centred teaching.

A welcoming first impression

A welcoming first impression will alow students to feel welcomed and that the instructor cares.  It is very rewarding when students open up and ask for help in what ever it is they need.  That trust and bond grows the the rest of the semester.

Teaching Online Learners

Teaching Online Learners is a challenging task when you have 9th graders that will be using Canvas LMS for the first time. I will have to center instruction on How to use Canvas during my orientation.

Fostering Lateral Leadership

Some of the more powerful learning experinces in the online courses I have taught are when a student suggests an approach to a technique or method of problem solving,  that is new to me., as well as the rest of the class.  I celebrate these moments.  Even if it is just something that I had not presented yet, but which lends to the subject at hand, I will highlight it. This helps to foster lateral leadership where students feel empowered to shre their perspectives knowing that it could be useful for the entire class.

Reflection

I gain a lot of valuable inofrmation to help me create an inclusive and productive e-learning environment. I am excited about implementing key points mentioned in the lessons provided. My goal is to help students feel comfortable with the online process. I feel comfortable implementing the strategies that I have gained from this training.

Keeping Students Engaged

Lesson learned.  I am an online instruction under a college teaching ELL.  Its difficulty especially when you have language barriers.  Nevertheless, to engage the students, I've learned to commit to showing the students respect, and incorporate their learning styles.  I've learned to use breakout rooms to engage students with a partner on any given assignment.  In the future I will utilize more discussions with assignments.  Therefore we can discuss and engage in real time.  In addition have students post their answers in course related forum and general questions in general areas platform. (Think, Pair, Share)

Easy Does It!

A practice that I learned and will implement, is to establish a great relationship with my students by providing a short survey for my students to learn about their interests and then to engage them in a discussion about those interests!

Be proactive

My best advice is to get ahead of any issues by being proactive.  Check-in with students and parents on a regular, just because.

challenges

My challenges with the current situation of the COVID - 19 has been at the high school level we could not do live video. Creating and recording lessons was very challenging and time consuming. There have been to many students and teachers that do not have access to the internet or even computers. I do not feel comfortable putting anything on Utube for students to access. The biggest challenge is the special education students. By law we must give them an evaluation with the IEP and we can not enter the house to evaluate the student. The only way I… >>>

Best practices

I try to be available to my students as much as possible and to let them know we are in this together.  Moving a course from F2F to online is very challenging especially when the students are at different learing levels.  Try to make the students who are not as strong know that you are available to them and you will help them succeed as long as they also put the work into the course (learning).

Make the course as interactive as you can and have the students participate with their knowledge.  See one, do one, teach one.....If they can… >>>

ONLINE CHALLENGE

I am a clinical instructor and doing online class is a big challenge NOT only making sure that students are on time but stay engaged during the whole session..

Online Teaching

Wisdom: Effective time management is applicable due to set times for classes.
Best Practices: Communication Skills are vital in online teaching because learners must seek help when need be. Teachers are willing to help learners, but they are unable to pick up on non-verbal cues, such as look of confusion on a learner face. Tips: communicate with parents and learners include e-mail, discussion groups, chat room, cell phone, and text messaging.
Action Plan: Environment.... Sit in a supportive chair, Have enough space for notebooks and papers, Have a good source of light and ventilation, Make hard copies for all your>>>

First time taking online courses

There is a lot of important information you need to know.  Read and take notes I found that was very important.  The quizzes I found helpful especially for the final exam.

Online teaching vs. F2F teaching

This is more of a comment on my thoughts regarding what I have learned so far in the Online teaching courses and from doing the emergency "Remote teaching" that has been placed on us (community college instructors) as of Spring 2020.  I am one of probably many who have been thrown into the online teaching due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has gripped this nation and everyone around the world.  I have experienced a number of issues/problems which I and many others had to navigate through.  Issues/problems such as of the following:

  • Campus Distractions (not only in my home but

Online Learning Experience

These six courses offered to teachers like me were very informative and eye-opening as we move into unchartered territory for K-12 teaching and learning in this COVID-19 era.  My mind races with stress level elevating each day that goes by and Virginia still has not shared with public schools what the start of the 2020-2021 school year will potentially look like.  As I have done for the last 20 years, I will enter my 21st year of teaching with the same mantra - It's all about RELATIONSHIPS! And these are created through communication - and if it is all or… >>>

Integrate technology

Actually we live in a techological society. We need to identify sources to integrate and improve the learning process. Really is step by step, but can be effective.

Rules of online teaching

To be sensitive to concerns learners are important to online teaching. Also, when the instructor comes prepared with experience students are impressed and are more respectful toward the instructors, whenever an online instructor comes packaged with academic credentials, years of professional experience, and accomplishments. This complete package allows an online instructor to showcase authority.

Teacher Personality and Student Engagement

I think teacher personality can positively effect the experience for an online learner.  There are many students who need to feel emotional involvement with distance virtual learning.  I find that an upbeat personality helps with lesson absorbtion, retention, and leads to a more welcoming learning environment.

The challenge with this, as an instructor, is to provide enough positive emotional support while not crossing the boundary into a laxadasical environemnt.  Commanding respect while operating in a friendly, relatable, and semi-relaxed manner is a balancing act.

I look forward to finding the best balance in emotional and instructional support for… >>>
