Tools

There are many useful tools for teaching. It is important to keep in mind the needs of students

Recommendations

Online courses are the key recommendations. Is very important provide clear instructions

How to succeed

Planning is crucial to success.  When taking an online course, it is best to track due dates and plan ahead.  This way, you will be able to check your progress and stay on track.

Making the students LEADERS FOR A CLASS

Students are told ahead of time when it will be their turn, in addition, they are given the topic to prepare with whatever method they want for a 10 minute teaching time. I have also ued a game called STUMP THE TEACHER with good results in this area.

Facilitate

Managing a successful online class is being an effective facilitator. This is done by using a neo-Socratic method in which the students teach you, but you listen and comment back on what they teach you. Questions will help facilitate their learning.

Will use day one !

Understadning the different types of learners in aonline setting was helpful. Even though I weas already aware of the different types of students, it was refreshing to have title or definition of each. I will try to be more aware of the behaviors that each learner demonstrates and tailor makle my responses accorindlgy.

Conversation with Students

I have found that attempting to communicate with students literally the next day does have its benefits. Many issues I have been able to address in a timely fashion. There have been times when sharing my work phone number was useful with resolving problems. These small details make the difference in helping students being successful.

Images

Hi All,

Whenever I post discussions and respond to students, they are much more responsive when I use an image that can relate to the content we are discussing.  Here is a site I developed to find images and other resources that instructors can use.

Problem-based Learning in Technology

I taught a senior level course in an IT program that essentially help students understand how to secure the perimeter of a network. While students were in a cohort, some had different training in underclass courses, and therefore different skills.

I located an assessment exam and had each student complete it. Those with the highest overall score could be "team captain" if they wished. Then I ranked the other students in terms of their proficiency in one of four areas. With this information on the back of the assessment results, the captains chose their teams based on assembling a thorough… >>>

Best practices

I am true believer of reaching out to students as much as possible. Students feel more comfotable in an online learning environment when they know they can contact their instructor and receive feedback quickly.

COMMUNICATION

I utilize video, announcements, and blogs in an online learning environment.  I find that a variation of communication will reach your audience.  Students have a variety of learning styles, therefore as an instructor we must attempt to reach each student with their perferred learning style.

Instructor Presence

It is very important that this occurs and it means so much to the students.  They are surprised that the instuctor responds daily, e-mail, text or even post in the classrooms on a daily basis.

Applying what is learned

Over the last few terms, I have made a active effort to reach out more to students and help them in any way that I could.  I want to be sure that they know that I want them to succeed and to achieve their goals.  I really enjoy activly engaging students in discussions that we have in the online classroom.  By asking questions about a topic or providing a hypothetical example, I think that helps students think critically and really dig into the topic more.

Critical Thinking is Lacking

I have found that this is one of the weakest areas in students.  When presented with a set of questions and one of them is a critical thinking question, some students skip the question.  They have not been taught how to critically think in high school.  I would recommend that schools implement a specific class on critical thinking as a core curriculum class to prepare students for their college coursework.

Wisdom

This is the most valuable of all gifts from teaching.  In the online environment the wisdom I have gained springs from knowing that each name on the roster is a human being.  I have learned that awareness, compassion, and praise when interacting with students, are pillars of student success.  Of all of these, awareness is the most prized since it allows me to access all the others.

Training trainers

My main purposes in taking this particular course was to get a feel for the level it is aimed at, so I can recommened it to faculty.  We do not do a lot of fully online teaching but are increasingly using blended learning and seeking to upskill faculty in techniques that will keep students engaged with their courses outside the classroom.

Teaching to a test....Why wouldn't you?

I am fond of the practice of connecting student feedback, learning objectives, and class content. I think we should always teach to a test. As long as the test is what we want the students to know. The formative and summative assessments should match the learning objectives, and the learning objectives are what we are teaching to. So the connection is pretty clear.

Share what I learned

From this course I have learned who to deal with different behavio, personalit's. Managing the course keep them busy answer their emails within 24 hour.

Capitalize the i when used as a proper noun.

How do you get students to use correct grammar?  Many of the students want to talk about themselves using the llittle i instead of capitalzing I.

Any thoughts?

Just in time to redesign my course...

I just finished my first class with Max Knowledge just in time to prepare my upcoming online Statistics course. I printed out many of the bulleted lists from EL102, and I plan to use these as checklists, as I prepare and update the course website. While I already use most of these, I now have a fresh take on "Teaching Online Learners". I especially want to focus on many of the pointers from the "Project Your..." sections. These will help to improve my "turnaround time" when responding to student submissions and/or inquiries; the lists will help me create an improved… >>>
