This section has valuable insights on how to create relationships with students online so they feel your presence as an instructor. I do my best to connect with students, but I could do a better job at sending out reminders.  I do feel through the use of video messaging, and quick, detailed responses, my students know I genuinely care about their success.

I plan to post a brief biography about myself for the first day. I want to show the students who I am professionally.

I learned the importance to the students learning experience by becoming personal, getting to know them and being available.

Initiate and lead in order to project your presence.

Having a video biography is more effective in the online learning environment. Having each student post a biography that other students read can help them interact together. Be sure and create a relationship with each student through things like personalized e-Mail or discussion boards.

I learned how providing a brief biography of myself and asking students to do the same can help foster engagement and instructor presence in the course. In addition, I learned how revealing my own credentials can help establish my authority in the class early on.

I learned that by projecting my presence and authority from a distance as well as having a relationship with the students will be  geared toward promoting and enriched, meaningful, and dynamic experience both for the students and instructors. There is a lot of great information and instructions  in this module that will assist me in being fully prepared for the course management system e- learning.  I will implement the  first assignment suggestion to get to know the students by having them post a biography to learn more about them as well as each student from another.

I like that we will encourage the student to post something personal about them self so that they can get to know each other better.

I will definitely be projecting my authority

This module helped communicate and give ideas on how a professor can make their presence known.  I like the idea of making videos rather than just typing up an announcement and I may try that next time.

Although a different environment, there are ways to lead the classroom and connect with the students online.

I find that I have to respond as an individual one on one and have discussions with my students close to the week that is ending.

I learned that one of the most effective ways to begin building an e-learning community is to ask students to post a short biography of themselves. I will start to do this when a new cohort starts.

Having a short biography at the course beginning can be useful for students to put a person behind the name.

I’ve learned how important it is for both myself and the students to get to know more about each other in order to develop trust between us and to feel confident that I have the qualifications to teach them the information.

In this course it is important to be sensitive to concerns learners express and questions they raise, and be consistent in the manner in which you provide timely feedback.

We learned some approaches to building a good relationship with learners and injecting confidence in them

As I am taking this course, I am actively applying it to an online course for my students. Not being afraid to be a little personal online is important for connect, trust of learning, and recall for the students. Demonstrating appropriate instructor-student boundaries while also being personable is encouraged. Also important to note to keep friendly items posted in a different location than assignments and discussion boards.

Developing trust and respect in an online format can be done through sharing teaching experiences and credentials with students.  This will reinforce their confidence in their professor guiding class content and interactions.

I learned that projecting authority at the beginning of an online section/semester is critical for earning the student's attention and respect. Utilizing a combination of credentials while remaining personable (e.g. share hobbies) are effective ways to do this.
