I am learning to set expectations by creating a supportive online community through a social learning platform that has:
Structure integrity
Navigational simplicity
Intellectual interaction
Active learner centered learning
In addition to the Couse Management System CMS having:
Learning Support
Technical Support
Couse Delivery
As the instructor of an online class, I need to give clear expectations and communicate my message. I also need to provide students access to communicating with me should questions arise. Before using online learning, students need to be given a tutorial on how to use the system. As the educator, I need to be prompt with replies and notifying students when they are falling behind.
It is important that students have the resources and technical support to be a successful online learner.
It is important for the online instructor to not only be prepared with quality instructional materials, formative and summative assesment tools, and engaging learning activities for students to both discover and apply course content, the online instructor must also be prepared and able to operate the mechanisms of the CMS in order for the student to have a good experience with the online course.
As an instructor, knowing course content and how to navigate the system is key. We should be aware students are not all the same, and learn in different styles, this is key- to post and show various forms of how to do the same activity. This can help break down the barriers for students and feel more comfortable- hopefully to ask more questions and not feel left out.
In an E-Learning environment, it is imperative that we as instructors familiarize ourselves with the CMS to better understand what the students will be seeing and processing as we move into a different direction of delivery.
As an online instructor there are a lot of factors that must be thought through in order for a course to be successful. You must be as knowledgeable about the content as you are the plaform you are using for the course.
It is important to be very familiar with the CMS so that content can be delivered and accessed in a meaningful way.
One need to have a full understanding of the course and it's content. Be able to effectively deliver the content to the students for success.
As an instructor for online learning, it is important to know how to use all of the functions that the students view, to be able to help them. The biggest thing to help students on an online platform is to know that someone is willing to work with them and the support. Then students will be more open to the online learning.
On a personal note, I find it hard for students to take a class and not have a specific teacher or an email where they can get support on the topic and parts of the platform for help. This can be frustrating for the students and then not want to learn on an online environment.
I've learned it's important as instructor to make sure we have access and knowledge of resources to be able to assist our students. If we can not answer our students we need to be able to point them in the right direction as to where they can find the answer.
Before you can expect your students to do something you must do. Don't have the say as I do mentality but the do as I do. To be a good leader you have to be a good follower.
Finding out what are the needs of my students during the e-learning process first. Then teach the subject after the needs are met or have been addressed.
Organization and great planning upfront is essential. I really need to plan the entire semester on paper before I ever get started. I think this is a very doable goal, having used Canvas extensively in my courses before and especially during these past nine weeks of school.
I consider myself a pretty organized person, so it'll just take some effort this summer getting ready for this new adventure.
Students' success if every instructor's goal. Both, the students and the insturctor need to feel comfortable with the content and the delivery of the course. The instructor also needs to have the support of IT. This part of the course outlines the multiple forms of communication forms available for the teachers and the students.
Most important is that the student doesnt get discouraged... and that i can help them in anyway
I have learned how to help students Understand the on line class with communicatrion between the student and instructor so they understand the information that they will be given.
Delivering online content requires a much different level of understanding and organization.
Just putting assignments out there for the students is not nearly enough. They must be provided with continuous instructional and technical support. Feedback is extremely important for their success.
I need to not only become familiar with CMS, knowing that knowledge alone of courses will not suffice in keeping students captured, interested, and participating. I must extend my knowledge of tools available for tracking individual students and making sure they too understand every tool to keep them engaged. Making sure they have excellent foundation of orientation of all material to technical support.
