it's important to help your students writing abilities in class which is an important tool in everyday life and the work force and is a needed skill. I can better help my students feel prepared and knowledgeable in their writing abilities by the class assignments I prepare for my students.
This section emphasized the importance of writing and how it will help the student to learn the material through the interaction and evaluation of the instructor.
Learning to write well can give the student more confidence in the subject matter, which will in turn give the future professional more competence. To be a good nurse, one must not only feel competent but appear as such.
Writing can be difficult for students and faculty, yet in different ways. The student may shy away because they may not know what to write. The faculty may find it challenging as time to grade writing assignments are time consuming.
I am reminded of how important it is to discuss the written assignment during class several times. To re-visit it on several dates, and have check points with the students.
In our Milestone Projects there are two steps which are completely written assignments, the pre-production explanation (Milestone 1) and the reflection (the final Milestone). These both call for an essay of 2 - 3 pages. What I usually receive from my students is a mixed-bag of a few excellent explanations and a slew of partial or jumbled thoughts that last a few paragraphs and then stop. Some are so full of grammatical errors that I'm, at times, unable to decipher what they are actually trying to communicate.
Now, I realize that for some of my students English is not a first language. In those cases I understand that while they can get their thoughts across conversationally, it can be a whole other challenge to put their thoughts into writing. However, for many of my students it can be pretty appalling how insufficient their language skills are.
So, when I assign the first Milestone this Mod, I've decided to take some time in class to put the seven points I just learned in this course on my board and we can all discuss the process of putting one's thoughts into writing.
Thanks, I'm glad I was exposed to this outline!
It is important to be able to relate to your students.
This was an interesting module for me. It made me realize the importance of writing skills in a technical education setting. I teach a very hands on program and often disregard the need for good writing skills. I agree that writing on a topic can help the students to better understand and do research on a particular subject.
Helping students know the steps in writing and following each step will keep their thoughts organized, which will lead them into being able to write them out on paper. Peer-to-peer editing/revision and teacher-student editing/revision is important so that the students can improve better on their writing.
Writing helps to organize our thoughts and communication skills.
Writing skill should be taught across curriculums and should be encouraged in each course level the student progresses to. In addition it is good practice to tailor the criticsms so that each student can have 2 or 3 areas to work on and improve. It is also essential to make sure there is positive feedback to encourage student progress
Writing is not just communicating what students have learned, but this is a means of learning and expressing what they have learnt. The stages of writing process were very helpful as this determines the kind of feedback to be given.
I think writing is a dying art. The rubric is a great tools to set the exspections for the writen assignments and shows the students where they fall short of the mark.
Assiting students to understand where the gaps in their writing are is critical, they can be motivated and educated to close those deficits with gentle and compassionate assist
Writing skills are important in any discipline. Providing positive feedback along with opportunities of improvement is key to student growth.
Students should be encouraged to improve their writing skills via assignments, which helps them express themselves, while improving skills and strategies.
Student have many challenges with structrual writing as many have developed writing as realted to "text messaging" Many have no clue to proper writing skills, but have learned how to properly write after some sessions on proof reading and rewriting drafts to adequately present the written document.
Reply to Justina Morales's post: I agree sometimes we get to wrapped in the little things and miss the point of getting students to learn how to communicate through writing.
It is important to be organized when it comes to writing.
Learning to write (and learning) never ends...
