Retention is particularly challenging when it is a long course and personal financial challenges make a student question the wisdom and feasibility of persisting with the class. This is where a clear vision of the rewards is vital.

Incentives

One way of improving retention is by giving out incentives to the students. We have to establish something that the students will look for. We have to motivate these students to stay in school and keep them in school. We have to reward them by giving them incentives. It does not have to be something costly. We can give them extra credits or by making their attendance in class a big impact on their final grades.

Not all instructors interact with new students, however it is equally important for all instructors to keep the same consistant message of all aspects of the orientation messages.

Diversity Student Retention

Demographic information shows that the minority population in the United States is growing at a faster rate than the majority. It is imperative that educational institutions find ways to help improve retention rates for all students but particularly minority students. Retention rates should not differ appreciably among different racial/ethnic groups.

Welcome the new student by introduce yourself as the intructor ,introduce the student with the class by her name and talk to the new student everything she will learn in the class before she will go to the next level and make her feel comfortable.

School Culture

Everyone in our institution must understand that the student success is the primary measure of our success. We all must be committed to this objective to help with our student stay in school.

Student Support Services

I think our campus could use some of these services to help our student succeed: tutoring, in house counselors or advisors, counseling referral programs, student advisors’ etc. I have several of students with extreme personal issues and they are trying to be committed at the same time, but it’s overwhelming for them. I have several that are struggling and it’s real hard to keep up with each one and their issues and keep the whole class focused at the same time. I try my hardest to keep reaching out to them but I really think they need more help then I can offer them. Some of the students need the extra time to feel comfortable to discuss their problems and with our hours being so limited we can’t offer the student a one to one appointment to help them out or give them some guidance.

Team Work

Team work is so important for the students. Every aspect of the school services needs to keep this in mind. We all need to provide the students with the best of our services in all areas of our school. We all need understand the student’s needs are important in every area and we all need to work together to make sure we all give the student the same message of how important they are and how much we care for their success.

Retention by caring

I believe we need to be honest with our students prepare ourselves to do our best and respect every person regardless of the situations they have. Teaching them to take one step at time and helping them to have confidence in themselves with the obstacles in their lives will help achieve their goals of completing their courses. Some of these students have challenging lives and it can be very tough at times and being there mentor has helped the students continue to be committed.

Classroom manager

Electing a classroom manager (student) who might be struggling in class could be a great opportunity for that student to feel important and to development a better self-image(this particular student may not receive the encouragement from home). Student will be responsible for cleaning the white board, taking pride in the classroom clean-up. Make sure you recognize student by giving the student a special certificate of appreciation.

Gaining Trust

It is the responsibility of the staff members to be able to gain the trust of the student. This will help in resolving personal issues or dissatisfaction in the classroom. The student should be informed during orientation who they can go to in order to resolve any issues they may have. They must feel that what they say will remain confidential.

Team work

Team work comes not only from staff members but to encourage students to work together to problem solve issues that may be out of their control. Appoint new students with a mentor who can help guide the new student, someone who can relate student to student. This is a welcoming commitment from the mentor to the new student, who is scared and unsure.

All Deparments Responsible for Retention

Retention starts with front desk; friendly, helpful, encouraging admissions: communicating with student guide them into the right course of study, inform student of expectations faculty:acknowlegde student on first day, students feel comfortable in discussing issues that are preventing them from attending class, structure in the classroom. management: become actively involved in the classrooms everyday. Listen to students who are in question, resolve any concerns in a timely manner. Career Services: Develops a rapport with students and guides them to become successful through professional development preparedness.

Frequent Starts

At our school, we have weekly starts. This poses challenges in following up with new students. Our Orientation process is good, I feel but I would like some suggestions on what to do to get a "temperature check" after the first couple of days of class. Keep in mind that I'm an Admissions Rep, so I have my limitations as I'm expected to continue to bring in new starts.

First day of class

I have been using this since day 1. At the start of every class I have each person including my old students explain what brought them here. This is a chance to listen and engage our students. It is the key to retention and building the support system.

Motivation for short term goals

It is very important to remind the students about why they came here in the first place. I like to "Engage" the students and remind them to keep your eyes on there goals. If we all get to know each and every student, we can sail to attrition of 100%. With these tools the students feel a part of a team or "family". Once we establish that support system our retention is untouchable.
