how do I make the orientation fun and interesting?

Orientations are meant for providing important information to students but how does the institution make this event fun and interesting so students are satisfied with their choice

Differences in retention rates with traditionally male/female programs

I work at a trade school which services traditionally male and female trades (welding, HVAC, Electrician vs. Cosmetology, esthetics)and find that the reasons for withdrawing for school tend to fall into two categories, most the of the necessary withdraws are family related especially in the female dominant trades.

Organizational Culture

In dealing with organizational culture, I believe everyone has to first understand what it means. To me it means how we do things within our organization and what we are displaying to our students. Also this means living up the culture we have developed, but if something about the organizational culture is not right changes must be made. I also see the importance of working together as teams, unfortunately this doesn't always happen because individual departments may be looking to set goals specific to their departments. Because of this they are seeking out what is good for them but maybe not what's good for the organization as a whole.

Positive Impact

It is always my goal to try and make a positive impact on students throughout class discussions. I want them to know that I am knowledgeable about the information but I also want to share real world examples with them so that it makes more sense and applies to them directly. I believe that if you make the goals clear at the beginning, during class and at the end (summarizing the lesson) the students will slowly begin to understand how this impacts their lives and ultimately their grade in the class. Real world examples to me are great because most people (students included) know what is going on in the world around them, but if they don't this helps to see the lessons more clearly.

Customer Service

At the college where I teach we have discussed the importance of customer service a lot. We discuss this because again, we want to be sure our students and anyone else entering our building know how much we care about current students and future students as well. One thing we do in regards to customer service is that when we help someone and have to direct them to another place or person we walk them to the place or person not just point and direct them to it. This allows them to get to who or what they need without additional problems. This also happens on the first day of class for new students and on orientation day.

Attendance

After reviewing the module and thinking about this topic. I have to say that continually working on attendance with students is important because students do care that you care about them. I have called many students and although they sounded as if my call was not appreciated by the end of the conversation they were glad I did and most attempt to do better. Attention=Retention is key because if we care and show it, I truly believe students will do better and remain in school focused on their goals.

Retention also has to do with attitude

I noticed with my students a lack of commitment goes hand and hand with attitude. If the student starts with a poor attitude it follows him/her throughout their entire class term. What usually ends up happening is the student begin missing class, failing exams, and finally dropping out of my class. My question: How are we, as teachers, suppose to change the attitude of an individual?

Making a memorable graduation

This idea I had heard of for people who are on a budget when getting married and I think it would work well for graduations. If the budget for a photographer is not there or in addition to a professional photographer, simply provide a bowl of disposable camera's in a general area and encourage students, staff, guests etc... to take photos throughout the even, at the end have a staff member, or student services or a depository of some type available at all the exits to collect cameras. The developed pictures are great with perspectives and shots that are natural and unscripted and can also serve well for both retention and admissions. Well worth a try.

Building Team Spirit!

A school where I first taught at would have “pep-rallies” ; and school sweater days..these were meant to instill pride in their school and themselves (student body makes up the school)to encourage the student to do their best and to build a stronger bond between the student and the school! The goal was to instill in the student a sense of “belonging”, that he/she is what makes a great school where great, successful students graduate to become successful practitioners of their trade or vocation!

Should we be Asking?

When we get new students (1st time enrollee’s) should we be setting aside some time at the beginning of the semester to set and talk with each student to try to get a heads-up on any issue(s) that might cause an “unnecessary” drop? As an instructor I try to get to each student and try to find out little things about them and their situations without coming off as being nosy! This helps in averting issues before they get out of hand for the student if I can offer alternatives or help them fing the right solution for their issue. What do you think?

My Definition of Customer Service
