Making students comfortable

I like to start my first class with details of what I expect of them. This makes it clear in their minds how to respond to my directions during the course. I also give them an exercise where they work together to find solution to a simple problem but in a group. This enables them to know their classmates better. They then have to present their group findings and work for the presentation as a group as well.

I agree with a post I read

I totaly agrees that students don't always see their instructor as someone from the real work settin (a false perception). A guest speaker can fill that void by answering student questions and sometimes reinstilling the enthusiasm the student had when they first enrolled.

Learning is important

We should apply our oragnization skills as well in the classroom but to our daily life at home.

Task are important

Evaluating task is important to plan what needs to be done first.

New Lessons for First time instructors

I think every one should read this and work on this assessment to be an effective and respected teacher in class.

ED104 Course

I found the course and information to be a great reminder and also provide additional ways to address class room management.

Cheating in class

this is a big issue for the college and the faculty faces the challenges.

How to deal with different types of students?

Nice topic with different approach.

Ed 104 Class

The Cases discussed in class are very helpful.

common instructor mistakes

when breaking up large groups of 16 students in groups of 4. i find you have to becarfull that 3 are not standing back and not getting involved. do not let one person who excells in class do all the work for the other 3. it will cause the other 3 to fall behind on there studys

what to do when a student distarcts other students

i had a chanlanging class recently were i had a student who always asked a lot of questions during lector time. it got to the point i had some other students leave class do to the distaction and were not able to learn. i found that limeting questions till break time works. that way he or she can ask all there questions and others do not feel the need to listen when it only confuses them.

dealing with student isues outside of class

one thing that is hard to get used to is how to deal with student isues out side of class. i find it is nessacary to be a good listener and not try to fix there problems but show you care

setting stage for sucess

i set a good envirement for sucess by encourageing students on how vast the hvac industry is and many areas to cross into for employment

Quiz 4 Questions #2 Has too Many Negatives

Was anyone else confused like me? I got the correct answer, but I think that the question was poorly written I had to read it a couple of times to get it. The confusing part reads: "A stressor should not be eliminated if its elimination causes people you don't know to strongly disagree."

Transparent Stree

I disagree with the "Thinking Break" for this section. It said that you should be transparent about stress in both your personal and professional life. This is not correct. I think that stress should not be transparent in your professional life. It is healthy for your friends and family to know of your stress levels so that they can help you cope with stress. But you should not be "transparent" about your stress at work. It is unprofessional for your students and boss to know that you are stressed. It is appropriate to speak with your boss about adjusting your work level to contend with your stress; but this is NOT the same as being transparent about your stress.

Staying consistent

I'm a softee so I give in a lot. So therefore there's some things I'm not consistent with

Common Instructor mistakes

When someone is new to teaching it is natural to want to be liked by your students. Getting off on the wrong foot could be detrimental to the entire process of getting to know the class. In career colleges especially, there can be a wide range of age groups. Whether the teacher is young or older, the mistake could be to seem as if you relate to one age group versus another. Establishing rapport with all students from the first day of class is one solution to avoiding problems or concerns with the class. Involve everyone

Having Students Grade One Another's Assignments

When going through the course material, the section on having students grade one another's assignments stood out to me. I am interested in hearing the thoughts on this particular time saving technique. I can see how it could be efficient for the professor, but I am concerned about the students may altered one another's answers in order to improve the students' grades. The students may view it as an opportunity to help each other out. If anyone has attempted to use this technique, how has it worked out? Have you encountered any difficulties?

Center stage students

The center stage student is usually identifiable on the first day of class. Sometimes the biggest issue with a center stage student is just that Attention. The center stage student can actually be a good thing provided you can keep them focused on one topic. When other students are hesitant to speak up during a class discussion, the center stage student will always be the first one to take part in the discussion which usually eases the other students minds about speaking up. It kind of gets the ball rolling and based on the center stage students comments it brings up other questions they may be reluctant to ask or discuss. So that can be used to an instructors advantage.

Keeping manners alive in the educational institute.

One of my biggest problems with up and coming college students is the lack of courtesy and manners that is running rampant in our society. I feel like this lacking has started at home and the parents of today are no longer requiring manners to be enforced in homes or even in public. This really bothers me because kids are being shown that there is no distinction between casual exchanges and business exchanges. Vocabulary is poor, grammar is horrible. No one is taught to revere your elders or respect them. There is no yes ma'am or yes sir. Common courtesy has lost its place in our modern society. I feel it is our place as educators to continue the responsibility of helping teach adults and young adults appropriate business behavior.
