Keeping students engaged

Keeping students engaged is important part of managing the students education. Lesson plans need to be written so that they can be extended or compressed as the students needs change. Teaching each lesson will encounter areas that will require change in method and activies to keep them involved, one way will be to go from lecture to physicial activity, getting them out of there seat and moving will wake them up.They will relate to visual technical activety better than just lecture sitting.

Visual lecture learing

The object in teaching is to give students a visual of the application of the subject as it applies to there field of study. Teaching with the use of Media enhances the lecture by showing the object that we are teaching. The use of overheads allow the student to see the actule flow, if you have them color in the area as you buildit projected on the white board. Powerpoint will show the design and add each step with each additional slide. This method involves hands, visual, and media for teaching.

Enable you to enable the students

Build excitement to bring the class together can only happen if you are knowledgable. You must have reviewed the course and be ready to relay the information to the students. Keep control of the class by making all students involved and excited in the learning. Change up the worksheets to various colored backrounds ketching the sight and attention of syudents.

Should I only give extra credit on quizzes?

I never give extra credit on finals. Should I?

Changing A Lecture

I find it best to have alternate lessons plans, so if the students are struggling we can participate in more hands-on activities.

How To Utilize Power Point Presentations Without Leaning On Them

Make sure if you are using Power Point that you don't only repeat what is on the screen. Know the lecture well enough that you are only using the presentation as an aid.

Having a "Different" Guest Speaker

I find it best to have a speaker that found their career unexpectedly the best for a career college class. Normally, their story is one with more turns and dips to than expected, and the students react well to that.

Chapter outlines & Journals

In an effort to encourage and realize text reading by students at a 2-year college, a useful "tool" is to require chapter outlining of major topics, important points, and a primary learned conclusion. In addition, a "Term/Concept" journal can be assigned to cover all chapter readings. Each student can then be assigned a specific "term or concept" to learn and teach to the class using real life application and experience. Lastly, allowing a 3x5 card to be notated on the lined-side only, and used during an exam over the material will encourage reading the text, and not simply relying on lectures and handouts.

Teachers - the best visual aid ever........Students, the best audience

I remember fully well what my teacher told us in one of our education classes. That the Teacher is the number 1 or the best visual aid you can provide in a classroom setting. No matter what kind of visual aids, lesson plans, strategies for Plan Bs, in case Plan A won't work, it is always the teacher who can "adlib" her presentation in the classroom. I also learned that a teacher must be versatile, like, a performer. Nobody will prompt us when we forget our lines, however, if we have a "prompter" like a readymade powerpoint presentations, or even an index cards, or even a short story, then we, as teachers, can save the monotony of a boring lecture, or bored students gong in and out of the classroom. I always carry with me real life cases taken from the website to reenforce my lecture, or an interesting 2 - 5 seconds case scenarios from the websites, or you tubes. Technology has much to offer for teachers, we can reinvent them to our advantage. In essence, we, teachers,dashed with versatility, are the best visual aid, ever.. Versatility in the classroom must be projected as we navigate the learning process. The classroom, is the best stage, that any teacher and student, can perform and learn together.

Students who test poorly

It is important to recognize the phenomenon of the student who participates well in class with answers, whiteboard work and homework assignments and then "freezes" when the written test is placed in their hands. A calm attitude, reassuring comments and even extra time to complete the test--along with some deep breathing exercises may be the answer.

Creativity

As instructors we know that creativity is a requisite for the posiiton. A good portion of my instruction is devoted to medical coding. In the course of the instruction, I refer to disease processes and their development to help make them understand the reason for the specificity of the codes and also to give them a break from constant numbers and researching in coding manuals. There are times when students will volunteer information about diseases they are familiar with--it all provides a review of anatomy and medical terminology while inserting some human interest into the course. Of course, all identities are deleted from discussions which serves as a reminder of the HIPAA regulations they must follow.

Student success

In order for a student to be successful you as an instructor must make sure you have equipped the student with the proper tools for success. i feel you should teach the student how to study and develop skills.

pretesting should be implemented properly.

Pretesting should be used among career college students. The information from pretesting would help instructor to develope a better instructional materials accordin to the need of students. Instructors should take role in pretseting.

Be prepare for class, or feel the heat

Being prepare for what you do is very important. That translate to knowning how long is the class and what you have to do in order to deliver the most information in a manner that student lear the most. Being prepare mean being effisient.

Do you ever ask students if they learned anything before leaving?

I often start the calss lecture with a little bits of information about what I will introduce differently. At the end of my lecture and presentation I ask their opinions and I ask them if they learn anything differently and what did help them. This way I take notes and improve my teaching method. Most important it get them ( students ) to be more involve and alert and interating with the subject. Time well spent.

Why take this Class

One of the first things i addrss in the classroom is why this class is important to the student. I relate the class and topics to the programs students have enrolled in. I feel that students are more interested in learning if they know why they are learning a subject.

Yes, we do them for our massage therapy program. Chair massage is very popular and a great way to take massage to the community and introduce the students to one aspect of their profession.
