I assumed that because the parents of the children I teach are younger than me that they would be more tech savvy. This is not the case and I will make sure to incorporate video tutorials for all the technology I teach with in the future.
As with any electronic median there must be not only requirements but guideline, standards, and usage of proper choices along with consequences to assists with student success. Because I'm from the generation that needs technology assistance I make sure I stay upto date and learn what tools with meet theneedsof my students and myself.
Technology skills are very important for online learning. What is mastered by some might be challenging for others. It is important to understand each student's ability and make sure none are left behind.
In using social networking I have learned. It maybe practical to use more than one social networking group. It will help the students build technology tools when using documents, videos and other media.
In wanting to remember the difference between asynchronous and synchronous (A for anytime as in A asynchronous) so that helps me and may also help the student remember the difference. This module gave some good resource links such as Jing, Cantastia, Captivate for use of recording my course tutorial. As instructor I need to make students aware of their online learning space and how to use social media as a learning tool.
Although social media is often a distraction in a face to face class, it can be utilized in an online classroom to establish a sense of classroom community. This can make the classroom feel more engaged and may ease in video sharing. This often can help students that are not good with technology to practice getting more tech savvy.
It is important to survey students regarding their technical skills and comfort level with technology. It is important to provide a list of technology access and skills that will be needed for the course in the syllabus, and it is important teachers assist students in obtaining the access and skills needed or lacking.
Students must buy in to the idea of student centered learning for collaborative meaningful learning with their teacher in a "guide on the side role" and become designers and evaluators of learning goals, course goals, and project goals in order to participate in evaluating and identifying the best choice of technology for various tasks in online learning.
I learned that networking on socail media can be part of online learning. Also the difference between synchronous and asynchronous learning.
We must be aware of our students technical abilities
reiteration of the synchronous andd asynchronous communication tools. Provided information in applying these tools properly to fit your class and your students.
Using a variety of online tools is important to include all learners; however, it is important that online teachers assess which tools are appropriate for each task and the learning objective.
I like the statement;"Students will construct knowledge rather than receiving it from the teacher." This is making sure the student is held accountable for his/her own learning. It makes sure the teacher has meaningful objectives.
By using varied LMS tools, we can create an environment in which the learner might feel more comfortable.
The use of more than one kind of technology tool gives the teacher varied options for presenting the material, engaging the students, and bringing the students into as well as participating lesson.
As technical skills are a fundamental part of an eLearning environment, this is something the instructor must establish upfront. Students should be given a survey of necessary skills, and tutorials in the case that they are deficient in any of these skills.
Students can use asychronous tools such as email, discussion boards, and wikis. They can also use sychronous learning tools such as application sharing, chats, or instant messaging.
It's critical to use a wide variety of tools.
I think it is important to assess student's basic technology understanding and abilities. This lesson talks about asychronous learning and sychronous learning. Knowing what infomation would be better taught sychronously vs asychronous I think would be critical for the success of the class. There are many tools a teacher can use being familiar with them and knowing the capabilities and understanding of your students is important.
During COVID online teaching, it became really apparent that many students think that they have technology skills, but in fact, they have "app" skills. The age of TikTok and Instagram has really impacted students' understanding of the tech skills that are needed. It seems like "tech skills" just get bumped into one big lump and students expect their app skills to transfer, when in fact they do not. It was valuable to read about the inventory of tech skills that we should emphasize with students. I'll definitely check in with them as part of the pre-class work to ensure that they know how to convert .doc to PDFs, etc.
Using a variety of technology is best to help students. STudents need to become familiar with the technonogy to be sucessful.
The tools discussed were very helpful but I found the ideas about learning space more useful. Making sure to include a variety of "spaces" for students to be engaged and active in the class seems useful.
