Activity

Since technology changes and unforeseen circumstances occur, I like the suggestion of rewarding the first student who notifies of a bad link, or other problem that may interfere with students accessing content, etc.

Students in an online classroom will miss some of the advantages of a face-to-face environment.  It is important for the instructor to facilitate communication among students without taking over group discussions.

I think managing a work/personal life balance could be challenging if working from home exclusively.  Setting a schedule and publishing office hours may be helpful.

Time management and organization are essential for success for the instructor and the students.  I liked the idea of using 3 lists of 3 to prioritize without becoming overwhelmed.

It will be helpful if I apply the 7 Principles of Learning to my instruction and also share these principles with the students so that they can do their part to achieve their educational, career, and life goals.

I will need to become familiar with all of the components of my LMS so that I can use them effectively to present content.  It will be necessary for me to evaluate my students' technical skills and comfort levels and I must teach them how to use the technology required to access content, collaborate and communicate with me and with one another in addition to teaching the content itself.

I learned some ways to incorporate group learning with my classes.  I had not considered using jigsaws with online learners, but the example provided made me see that this technique can be adapted to use with an online class.

I will need to have my students self assess their learning styles and provide some guidelines to help them with organizational skills as needed.  Students with disabilities may require additional time, recordings of texts, or other accommodations in order to be successful in the online classroom.

Communicating a Code of Conduct will help to establish a good online community of learners.  Listing and providing examples of expected behaviors and the consequences of actions outside of the expected behaviors is a good idea.

It may be difficult for me to understand why students are not participating in class because of the absence of non-verbal communication like facial expressions that I am used to having in a face-to-face class.  Communication will be important in keeping everyone engaged and understanding barriers or problems.
