Online Teaching Techniques --> Managing the E-Learning Environment
Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.
While completing this module I learned that the best form of communication for an online class is email. I also enjoyed reading about the different types of learners.
I liked the breakdown of types of learners (noisy, quiet, procrastinators). I have experienced some of these types of learners in online classes I have taken.
In terms of behavior, conflict, and attrition management, I learned that consistency, clear expectations, and early intervention are key. Most issues can be reduced when students understand the rules, feel supported, and know the instructor is actively engaged.
I plan to apply this by addressing small concerns early before they become bigger problems, communicating clearly and respectfully, and reaching out quickly when a student starts to disengage. Building relationships and showing students I care about their success can also help reduce conflict and improve retention.
Getting ahead of any frustration or building conflict within the course is important for student retention and a cohesive learning environment for all students. Building relationships with each student is key to prevention of conflicts. Holding a boundary as well as showing care and concern & support are what students need so they can succeed. Handling conflicts privately is best. However, online, in the moment is challenging. The instructor has to remember the course benefit to all students and not let the loudest student take the time away from others.
There are similarities to classroom setting
I will strive to learn the different learning styles of our students
In this last module, I learned about different types of students and certain patterns of behaviors that can be noticed in an online environment. Additionally, ways on how to mitigate any situations with conflict management.
I have learnt very interest facilitator skills, by example, the attrition management. Is very important role to guarantee the participants will stay in the course until the end.
I will work to try and understand about the students and their learning styles, study habits and levels of procrastination. We can do this via meetings or through an email discussion.
Students can feel isolated doing e-learning. Identifying those students and working on getting them engaged can help them feel more included and in turn focused on their education and completion.
My takeaway from this module is how to better be able to handle conflict properly.
Virtual classrooms are great for people who are advancing their education while working.

Providing counsel to students can be effective via email.
I learned best ways to communicate with all types of learners and resolve conflicts in an online environment.
I found out that the best form to communicate in an online setting is through email, and instructors should try to help the students to not feel alienated or overwhelmed with online work.
In one section of this module, we were told to remember to always keep a record of all communication relevant to handling any behavioral problem.
Documentation should be concise and consistent to include (1) be objective and specific, meaning withhold your opinions and just document the facts; (2) record virtual sessions if allowed since recording synchronous classes provides concrete evidence of actions during live sessions; (3) note communication attempts and log every interaction with students and parents, including emails sent, phone calls made, and virtual office hour check-ins; (4) document interventions by keeping a running log of strategies tried, the date they began, and their effectiveness; and (5) time-stamp everything to ensure all notes have a precise date and time because this is crucial for legal and administrative review.
Best form of communication is via email.
