Career readiness is important for allowing students to get into various job opportunities with a high level of success.
I have learned for students to be successful it needs to start from the very beginning in admissions. Helping Students with mentors, access to available good jobs, a great graduation. Helps to keep your program admission rates increased, satisfied students, and higher retention.
I have learned that the placement department plays a pivotal role in a student success. Career services and admissions will assist with motivating students.
By having Career Services available to the students, it provides an additional layer of support for career readiness which increases their knowledge and skills they need to be successful in their chosen field.
I always felt like students that know how important being job ready is, helps with retention. It goes beyond resume writing, but also should include interview preperation and soft skills. Career Services knows what employers want, so they are that bridge in my view.
Students who do not see the end of their labors -- the fruits -- tend to lose focus and drift. Career Services and the Academic Programs must work together to keep students striving and motivated -- sharing placement information (especially success stories) is a wonderful way to do that!
The student having an idea of what their career will look like outside of school will greatly motivate them to finish the program.
A student's ability to begin picturing themself in their new role post graduation is a critical retention and completion tool. Life after graduation may be a source of anxiety unless students have confidence in the Career Services Department. Is it successful in preparing students for, and connecting student to, entry level opportunities after program completion? Seeing is believing. Frequent employer information sessions, on campus hiring event, job fairs, job postings (student and graduate level), field trips to employer facilities, job readiness workshops and individualized resume writing, career planning and interview preparation assistance all work to create a sense of security and confidence in the student.
Comment on Ashley Kyler's post: Its important as a teacher to be connected to the career programs.
The Career Services/Placement department plays an important part in retention at a school. Through these experiences, students become motivated and begin to see themselves in the job they want. Placement services must take place throughout the student's time in their program. I hope to implement this strategy by setting up visits from employers for students to meet with them.
"An effective and active placement department is an integral part of a school's retention plan."
If the school works to develop effective admissions procedures, well planned orientation programs, good mentoring, student involvement, fabulous graduations ceremonies and students getting good jobs them the results will be increase in enrollments, high retention rates, student and staff satisfaction improvement and great placements rates.
I learned that the primary reason students decide to further their education is to achieve the career they want so I think it makes sense that we want to keep that goal centered throughout their education
I truly enjoyed learning the importance of each department and their effect on student retention. From admissions, orientations, student services and career services, we each have a role in creating a positive and successful student experience.
Schools need to have a website with job listings so that current students see that there is a need.
I learned thet many instructors h ave previousl worked in the field in which they are teaching. Students should be taught employment skills training, which should be inclusive of job readiness, resume writing as well as interviewing skillls. Schools should implement great orientations programs, effective mentoring, student classroom involvement, fabulous graduations and successful placement. All these are great qualities to enhance retention.
I learned that employment skills training that requires personal assessment helps students to identify their positive qualities. Students can be successful when they are aware of their positive qualities and personal strengths. The awareness of these personal attributes is something that can increase persistence during challenging times.
I learned that many professors have worked in the field in which they're teaching, and can effectively integrate career opportunities in their curriculum by disucssing those possibilities. I will apply what I learned by continuing to volunteer at my campus' graduation as a way to encourage the students to seek employment in their field.
