Preparing Yourself for the Classroom | Origin: ED105

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Instructional Planning for Student Success --> Preparing Yourself for the Classroom

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

Teaching is not the priority, instead student learning is the priority.

Through this topic, I learned that effective instructional planning begins with being well prepared before entering the classroom. Teachers should understand learning objectives, know their students’ needs, organize materials, and create engaging lessons that support student success. I also learned the importance of flexibility, assessment planning, and creating a positive learning environment where all students can participate and achieve their goals. I intend to apply these principles by preparing lesson plans in advance, using a variety of teaching strategies, and regularly assessing student progress. By staying organized and responsive to student needs, I can help create a productive and supportive learning experience for every learner.

Effective classroom management begins long before students walk through the door.  Being intentional about routines, expectations and relationship building  creates an environment where students feel safe, respected and ready to learn.

be excited about your field and excited to teach it

Knowing and understanding the learning dynamic of your students helps one to better prepare on how to deliver classroom lecture content. From utilizing personal experiences, making the lecture relatable and personal to where they are thinking about themselves, their families, or where their end goal will take them, we always want to be learning. How we carry and structure ourselves shows a side of us that students can adapt to in their own lives. How we handle questions or situations or even going through mock exercises, allows students to see other perspectives and think of how they would approach a situation. Every day is not the same. Sitting in a lecture from someone who is monotone will not peak my interests to learn more. We need to be fluid and adjustable to what walks in the door. Every experience and become a learning experience, not only for the students but also for instructors.

Tener siempre preparado mis recursos con anticipación y que la invitación de ponentes exitosos puede generar intéres en mi clase

Knowing who your students are is most important in being successful as a teacher.  One thing I have done so far is to go a bit beyond to learn who my students are, and that means even taking the time to know them by name first (sometimes memorizing faces and names to remember them), then observe them by their personality types.

After teaching in after-school programs for almost ten years, coming into an official school district setting full time is quite interesting.  Getting to know the students is the best part by far, I believe that goes a long way in helping them learn.  The connectivity is key; being able to connect with them personally has led me to become a quasi-mentor to some of them, a few who are not even in my own class.  We share a room with our full-time pilot teacher who teaches in the morning, as our role is to be backup for him.  I've gotten to know his student population and have connected with quite a bit of them.  For our own class that takes place in the afternoon, I have gotten to know all of them, and I would say maybe a couple of them I have become a mentor to.  So I would say my style is part Zen, part Socratic, maybe even a bit Dead Poets Society (mainly with humor and enthusiastic-style presenting), but all enwrapped with my own personality and personal style to teaching the material.  It's been a rewarding experience so far

I think that's its important that I show my students that I am organized so they now its important for them as well. I will lead by example.

Being organized and prepared shows your true self to your students! It has helped my students know they can always count on me to give them the materials they need or what is to come - it has driven their success.

From this module, I learned the importance of being prepared and organized before students enter the classroom. A positive first impression, clear expectations, and having materials ready can help students feel comfortable and motivated to learn. I also learned that showing enthusiasm for the career field and sharing real world success stories can inspire students and increase engagement. I intend to apply this by preparing my classroom ahead of time, maintaining a structured learning environment, and encouraging students through positive examples and career connections.

Knowing my personality, being ready for class, pausing, using colorful handouts were just some of the useful reminders in the section.

To make sure I start each class prepared and some sort of lesson plan ready to go to optimize class time.

I learned that preparing for the classroom is more than lesson planning—it includes organization, clear expectations, and anticipating student needs.  I plan to use better pacing, structure, and engagement strategies to create a smoother learning environment for students.

In this section I learned to change up the pace in order to be a better Instructional Delivery Expert (IDE).  It could mean taking a 20 second pause, bringing in a guest speaker, or even changing my delivery from Drill Sergeant to Socratic method style teaching. Overall, organization and having everything ready to go is a big plus because it reduces distractions.

Showing excitement about your career field, sharing success stories, and being organized will positively impact student learning and engagement in your course, and set a culture of learning and positivity in class.

Try to find a teaching style that works for me so I am able to the best instructor possible and be able to educate the students with out them getting bored.

We all love stories of success it helps to stimulate enthusiasm about our chosen career path
