It was eye opening to read about some strategies when it comes to extra credit. My first two years of teaching, I have used it to "help" students improve their grades. I enjoyed reading about using it for students to "show-off" their knowledge or do more work on a project. It was reassuring to read that extra credit should be used to go from a minus to a plus within a letter grade and not raise a letter grade.
A big takeaway I have is understanding that students are missing the background experiences. Coming from the world of Video and Television, it's hard to get into my mindset that students who take my classes, haven't been creating content for years.
Be conscious of the medium you are using as a teacher to present and ultimately connect information during instruction. Practicing and being comfortable with the material is important to help with conveying they information.
My biggest takeaway from this topic is to "know yourself". We are all SME's but knowing who I really am helps direct how I structure my classes and how I prepare ahead of time for my instruction.
