Being a part of planning, organization, and directing

Recently I sat in on a conference call with other instructors regarding a new class within a new curriculum. During the call many issues were raised and I recognized I work with a talented group of individuals. It was nice to be a part of the planning and roll out process. I took on a greater appreciation for the work that had been done and what I can do to help the organization in teaching the class. A little inclusion goes a long way!

The receptionist

I don't think enough importance and appreciation is given to receptionists. They truly are the first impression the student gets of the school and its people. When they give the student their FULL attention and positive non-verbal it really makes a difference! This training (or similar) should be mandatory for receptionists.

Customer Service Perspective

I recently started to look at my roll as an instructor more from a customer service perspective. I find I am much more attentive to the needs and wants of my students. I also find I think of myself more as a representative of my school and feel I have a duty to adhere closely to the goals of the organization. This new perspective has enlightened me to teach, communicate, and behave in ways I took for granted before.

Tell, Tell, Tell

I often find myself repeating learning objectives in class and wonder if I am over saturating the lesson. I was pleased to see I am on the right track in the latest section of the class. I teach culinary arts and though there are many facets to accomplishing a particular skill, I want to instill the core fundamentals associated with the lesson or skill at hand.

Lack of Vision

I have had several students who sail through classes with very little difficulty until they reach the end of their program. In their last classes they struggle, even fail. When you talk with the student you realize they lack the vision to see themselves actually performing in their new career "school is safe" "I don't know enough" "I really can't do it in the real world". The first couple of years I taught this took me by surprise. Now I watch for this type of student as they approach the end of their program. I talk and listen to other faculty to make sure we recognize this pattern early.

Power of vision

Is very important the intructor have a vision from students side to understand what they need to learn.

Students Retenion

This modulo is very interested how we as a intructors need be pay attention on the students need, to make them be sucesseful.

Study Skills, Stress Management, and Community

I have recently taken over the role of General Education Department Chair at my campus and need to improve the department's retention, absence rates, and failure rates. I would like to include the following topics in all first-quarter classes: - Study Skills - Stress Management - Seeing the class and school as a community It appears that these are three major issues that relate to retention. My question is: How can these skills incorporated into classes that are not college success courses, such as math or introductory computer classes?

support

the team has to all be on the same page for success

support

instructors need to support the students

student happiness

you should tell students how greatthey will do and how high you have set your expectations of them.

MENTORING

the walk and talk the talk as a mentor, to have credability with your students.

Culture and the workplace

To be a contributory member of any organization, one has to understand the culture within the organization. For example when one is hired at an organization, he/she must closely watch the culture in order to find how one fits in. Failure to do so can result in a disconnect that can cause unproductivity and discomfort in the workplace.

IQ vs EQ

I have witnessed many students with a low IQ be saved by their EQ. Most often faculty are inspired by students whose EQ is honest and full of determination.

Education as a Business

Have you heard, "Are you in the business of teaching or in the teaching business? " This is a statement that tends to confuse many people. In my opinion, either way one look at the statement, if a educational facility wants to stay in business, it must create products(graduates) that are useful to employers and the community at large. Through good business practices of customer service and educating students, the education business will strive.

Attention=Retention

I agree with this notion because if one is not known, they begin to fell that they do not belong. A sense of belonging is what keeps students coming to the school an dinto the classroom. One way or another, students need to connect with their school. In my observation, student led and faculty sponsored organizations serve a relatable community for many students.

A common vision

Getting everyone on the same page can be difficult. It seems as though each group has its own agenda. identifying common interest seems to be one way to encourage people from different groups to work together.

EQ and accountability

I think EQ is related to accountability. People high in EQ seem to have greater control over their emotions. People low in EQ want to blame everyone else for their problems. For example, other people make them mad. This is significant because if a person goes through life blaming others, they never assume accountability of the results they achieve, or don't achieve and consequently don't address their issues.

Beliefs

I find that people in general including students always think the way they see themselves or the world is correct. to me, one of the greatest challenges is to get a person to question his/her own beliefs.

Modeling

I have found that many students don't really understand how demanding a professional position can be. Far too often, they use their friends as a reference group to determine proper behavior. That may be ok, but generally a student is better off if he/she uses people that make up their profession as a reference group, or in their absence, their professors. Recognizing this places a significant responsibility on our shoulders to help students be successful.
