School Events

School events are a great way for students to get to know each other. I try to provide opportunities in the classroom for students to bond with each other, but it would be nice if there were more opportunites outside of the classroom. Aleesa

Retention through Intervention

Typically, what percentage of students are retained when early intervention stratgies are used? What are some of the Best Practices for these stratgies in the industry today?

mentoring

I really like the idea of having a formal mentoring program. Is this an option for our Concorde students?

Applicant qualification checklists

I think these are a great way to find out whether or not the student has a strong understanding of the program they are interested in attending. Sometimes students are not aware of what they're getting themselves into, and by the time they find out it's too late. Aleesa

Grades

Out of all the classes that i have thought I notice that students are intrested in their grades To them it is an accomplishment and all so motivating. Students tend to see there strong points and their weak points so they can improve on it.

Orientation Optional?

The course literature states: "As you plan orientation and mentoring programs the most important things to remember are: Orientation and mentoring are among the many 'optional' services to offer students." Question one on the quiz is "Orientation programs can be optional for most programs." I don't really know about most schools and colleges but I have never had to make it mandatory in my experiences in different schools. It is highly encouraged and recommended. Can someone clarify this for me?

Students know we are there for them matters!

I have my heart in educating students and I must say that they are so appreciative of my efforts to work with them. Although I do follow the policies and procedures of the program and stick to them, my students understand that they need to all have an equal education and equal accountability. Tutoring sessions are a place to not only educate our students, but to get to know them and share some experiences. It is also a good time to share with them channels of communication between them and me and the college support systems also. It makes a big difference to these students to know we are here if they need us!

New teaching strategies can help keep students interested

Show You Know

The first week of school, have the student go to each facultyand staff name on the paper and have them sign their sheet every morning. Students should have at least five signature on their sheet. The student should address the person by name and say good morning. If the student do not address you by name, then the student have to address two other people to make up for that one.

Sharing and Caring

During orientation, having the students introducing themselves to each other is a great idea. Also have the first instructor the students are going to meet attend the orientation so the students will be familiar with him/her on the first day of school. On the first day, give the students a scavenger hunt list and have them go to some of the facultyand staff for signature. This will help them to familiarize themselves with the staff instead of being afraid or intimidated by them.

Games

Find a word game sounds great as a class electricity game.(Use the ten main words in the electricity chapter, place them around your department and other departments that uses electricity and have the student find the word, then add the definition to the word when they get back to class). The person with the most correct answere win a small prize. You will be surprise to find how hard students will work for a sucker.

Successful Students

To ensure students success, try not to be more of a friend than an instructor. That line is easy to cross when try to gather information to what the students need inside and outside of the classroom

Web-based retention intervention system

The course mentions that some schools are using "web-based retention intervention system that provides students with a confidential, non-confrontational, non-judgmental way to contact school personnel". My school does not do this and I'd like to know if anyone here has experience with this technique and what the results are?

Retention

Retention is often over looked at our facility I have found working within a group to put the students first has helped with the retention at our facility.
