Students with Social Disabilities

I have taught a class with an Asburgers student - where the social component of the brain isn't fully developed. These students are incredibly bright, but it doesn't relay well to the class. They can be disruptive and impinge on other's learning goals. However, the student has just as much of a right to be there as the next student. What is the best way to move forward when you are put into a similar situation where classroom management and dealing with social disabilities?

dealing with stress

We are all going to have stress but we can eliminate alot of it with in ourselves. Make sure to excerise, eat right, dont smoke, dont drink, and most of all make time for the ones you love!!! This is so much easier said then done sometimes the ones we love the most are the same ones that stress us over the top (my kids)!! I have to take the time to look and reflect alot and put into groups stuff I can fix, cant fix and simply do not want to deal with... This has help be a better parent, instructor and coworker.

STRESS

Stress is something we all live with in our everyday lives. This is normal to a extent. We all need alittle stress to be productive such as deadlines, schedules ect.. But over the top stress day in and day out 24/7 could be life threatning. The body starts breaking down from the inside out, it could start with a cold and end up with a long term death sentence. Juggling personal and professional life is hard but I feel we have to take time for ourselves to rest, eat well and excerise to beable to keep up with this fast pace life. Sheryl Kiser

Giving a test in a full classroom

I have found that having numerous versions of tests takes care of this problem. It is more work for us as Instructor's, but it is more beneficial to the student's and much easier to clarify and have concrete evidence if a student is actually cheating.

Technology being a downfall in a classroom setting

In my classroom, every student has a laptop. Now a days, they also have smart phones which have internet access. During my lectures, and anytime I am speaking I have them all close their laptops and leave their phones in their bookbags. Walking through the school one day I peaked through the window of another intructors room and saw that he was lecturing and all of the laptops were open to Facebook, Yahoo, whatever. During lunch, I took him to the side to tell him this, and he was surprised to hear about it. He made a point to have all of them close them from then on and noticed an improvement in grades. : )

Motivating students in the morning that work the night shift.

Starting my class at 8 a.m. makes it difficult to sometimes get the students involved and motivated to start learning. One thing I like to do is to get them laughing a bit. I find that this helps wake them up a bit and tends to get them focused on what I will say next. I do not embarass them by any means, but I like to get everyone involved in some way or some how.

MULTITASKING

Having many responsibilities from different jobs at once makes me multitask in order to be effective in every one. Sometimes I count on that to save time and meet dead lines and when I can't multitask I feel the stress and I can't get to chose what to leave undone, everything seems important.

Working With Adults and What I Have Learned

This was really a great class. I have been working with adults students for 10 years. This class is an excellent refresher on working with adults. Here are some of the ideas I have gleaned here: 1) Adults need to know why they are learning something: This means that they need to know the value of learning the idea or concept 2) Adults need to be self-directed. When it comes to education, they need to feel that they have control over their educational outcomes. Often they are making a choice to go back to school and therefore they want some control over what they learn and why. 3) Adults have their own experiences to bring to the classroom. These experiences need to be valued by the instructor. At times adults come in with formed expectations and perceptions. These need to be taken into account as the classroom dialogue ensues. 4) Adults need to be brought to a place where they feel their education is paying off now. This is achieved when the goals are more present-focused than future focused. It is important for instructors to connect a goal in the classroom with a skill that can be immediately translated into the real world. 5) Ultimately adults are motivated by their own internal drives. The way knowledge is presented to an adult needs to meet with their inner drive to succeed and feel that they are that they are growing as an autonomous, competed and relational human being.

To do list

I think learning the do's and dont's of a to do list will really help me reduce stress. I actually encouraged a co worker to do this when he seemed overwhelmed with tasks. I also believe this helps you not worry about things when you write them down.
