Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Skill Level

I think it is very important to let students know your experience in the course you are teaching. Let the students know they can ask any questions related to course content and then have class discussion.

showtime

meeting our class for the first is an ambivalent feeling. We maybe a well prepared instructor did our research but when emotion overcome our preparedness something may happen. the important thing is checked our composure and know our equipment prior to the "show".

Cultural Difference - Teacher/Student

In my experience, students performance and classroom participation has some relation to their cultural background. Understanding some of these cultural differences among the students is vital for effective evaluation. For example, some students may know the content very well but scores low in a debate performance.

Bounderies

Bounderies are made in order to provide orderly conduct in the classroom and discipline needs to be established.Out of line student must be refocused on the subject at hand and let them know that as an instructor, we are the authority and respect in the classroom is the prime concern. as an instructor and a human being, how can we prevent our very own emotion spill over for the class not to see them? at times i think we are very poor dramatic actors.

when you deliver material, do it with confidence

your students will judge you by how you know and deliver material

set the stage on a positive but firm platform

the first 5 or ten minutes of each class will be the deciding factor for the rest of the class

good attitude, good appearance

always have the good attitude toward your class at all times, always look the part as well as be the part

Firm and Direct

On the first day of a new class I tend to get an important message across to the students. I am firm and direct letting the students know that I am the PACK LEADER. I go over the rules, objectives of the course and my expectations of my students. I tell them that my attitude will be a direct reflection of theirs. Once the message is sent, I tell them that it will be a fun class and very educational. I try to provide a positive and interactive learning environment. What are your thought?

Keeping their Attention for 5 hours

Attention span is directly related to the way that the material is presented. It is our job to "feel" how they are recieving our method at any given time and change up to keep every student on board. "Entertainer, comedian, producer and instructor." that was a key point to this module. I am still constantly chasing this, it is somtimes fun and sometimes frustrating in my opinion... but always an interesting challenge for me.

Technical Drawing as teaching aid

I wanted to share an approach to reaching different learners through the use of technical drawing excersizes. I instruct students in an automotive tech program on basic engine design and repair. One of the more difficult tests we have is on cylinder head designs, componets and service. While performing the usual "lecture" which reaches auditiry learners well, and showing power point presentations provided in our curriculum I have added a lengthy drawing of the componenets on the white board using many colors and labels. I ask the students to do their best to duplicate my drawing in their note books. I change the drawing three times, adding features and service procedures along the way and ask the students to make a total of three drawings in their notes. I leacture away while completing my own drawings. I have had such great success wit this that I hardly use the powerpoint presentation as a review for the students who learn best through reading, but the drawing/lecture takes up the majority of the time. I have seen a drastic improvement in the overall test scores since I started doing this drawing excersize and the students seem to be more engaged and enjoy that lecture. I studied drafting years ago and this no doubt helps me create better drawings that some other instructors, but I encourage others who may be good at drawing to use this tool and those who are not very good with technical drawing to seek help getting better at it so that their visual and tactile learers stay engaged and learn. Feedback?

Motivation

On real life basis, How can the instructor motivate the learners? And how can you, as an istructional leader, to stop the negative effect of the non motivated stutent?

Being buddies with your students.

The first chapter to this training talks about being a friend but not a pal. This can't be anymore true, I have noticed when I observe other becoming pals with students, it makes it hard for other instructors to be more professional with those student because they expect you to be their pal and when you follow a professional regime they might lose some resect for you.

keeping up on new technology.

I have found you need to keep up on new technology that sometimes takes a while to make it into the curriculum once it is implemented in industry. Constantly look for new things that good students that do there own research might ask you.

Attitude

Attitude is a very important fact when it comes down to the interaction between you and your students. A positive attitude goes a long ways when you are trying to get a point or a subject matter across. It is important that you have an up beat personality and a simple smile on your face. We all have personal issues in life but when that bell rings its "SHOW TIME"! I try to animate myself and provide a positive learning environment. That state of being seems to work and the students remain more focused. Encourage student participation and interaction, promote question asking and remain positive. Do any of you have a different approach that seems to work for you?

showing videos

showing videos as part of your course content is fine,as long as the legnth of the video is kept short, and you do not use the videos to teach the class.

Instructional Style

We are continuously fine tuning our Instructional Style as we grow in the course/subject - the style in one course/subject may not apply as well in another.

Interaction

Interacting with students on the first day lets them know you are approachable.

End of course testing

In our course the end of course testing consists of being able to set up a drum and a rotor on the brake lathe...this lets us know first...the student has been practicing using the machines like they are suppose to be doing and second....it tells us they are competent on using the machine which is pretty much the standard machine the student will use in almost any shop they go to work at....the other test they much complete is being able to disassemble and reassemble a drum brake assemble within 10 minutes...this lets us know once again that they practiced the techniques used and also are familiar with the proper tools needed to accomplish this task....both tests seem to work out very well for us.

avoiding following the powerpoint

I see that as an Instructor it can become an easy trap to fall into( just following a powerpoint). What things or methods do you have as an Instuctor that help you to teach the material and not just follow a powerpoint?

Knowledge test

One of the things we do here in our course is to give the students a knowledge test pretty close to the end of the course...this test pretty much covers everything we have gone over in class and is designed just like a standard ASE style test. It is very benificial to see that usually almost everyone in the class is able to pass this test and really reinforces how far the students have come with their knowledge in the class...I also ask the class how many think they could have passed this test before taking the class and very few if any will ever raise their hands.
