Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

ED107-Do you find any of the ongoing discussions interesting or thought-provoking?

Backward chaining ,teaching from the end ,might work for computer classes but I do not think it works for medical classes as if I try that, student will say (Iam confused). But I like to enforce and debrief at the end of the class to show the big picture.

ED107-Do you learn by teaching others?

Absolutely. I love teaching and learning (two way communication) as I learn from my students things I was not exposed to in my career. I had MA student who finished surgical technician course before and took laser courses. He had no struggles in clinical skills classes specially naming surigical instruments. I enjoyed having him in my class and his questions/notes/feedback made learning process more fun.

Bloom's Taxonomy

I need some ,ore info.  Sounds interesting.

student preparation

I find the most trouble I have implementing a flipped classroom is with student preparation.

I continually have the same students who are prepared and involve themselves the most but others who consistently arent and participate little.

How do others solve this problem?

All done

This was ver informative.

Active learning methods

Although I believe I have used some of the methods in this course, I thought the course was harder than I expected.

PERFECTING TEACHING METHODS

i AM ALWAYS INTERESTED IN STUDENTS FEED BACK AND HOW TO IMPROVE ALREADY KNOWN TEACHING METHODS.

Student Monitoring

I believe 'floating' around the classroom has made me aware of struggling students the most. I have always used this with very good sucess in keeping my students focused.

Student Time Constraints

Outside of class, most of my students work. The biggest challenge to the flipped classroom  has been a reluctance to enage content until after they have been to class and found out how little they know.  With all of their other challenges, there is little motivation to do so otherwise.   However, I am considering an attempt at 'change management' to flip their habits.  I will call them content teasers....to help them acquire the habit of 'previewing' the class content, as opposed to 'studying' it for long lengths of time.   I see two options for this:

  • Video introduction
  • Discussion forum

This content teaser would be a <5 minute case study style scenario that requires what they will be learning to solve it.  Again, my goal is more of a habit change than full scale flipping.

Thoughts?  Anyone tried this?

basic skills

How would you rate the basic skills needed for different jobs or tasks?

Self Improvement

If my reading of history has taught me anything it is that those who wish to accomplish great things must continually work to improve their skills and their knowledge base. That being said they must also be prepared for a lot of set back and to work with no apparent reward in sight. The reason being is life has opportunities that occur at random intervals and it is how you do on these opportunities that will determine if you move up or if you move down.

Standard power point lectures

Do people still do traditional teaching by power point?

Ideal guide for new teachers on how to properly manage a classroom

1st day of class

I enjoy putting a rolling powerpoint up prior to the students coming to class on the first day.  They take an interest in whatever the topic is and I believe it is committed to memory when we get on a bigger level of the topic.

asking questions

Asking certain type questions can be helpfull to find out if a concepet is understood

The three Ms are so important..

An instructor following the three Ms of modeling, managing, and motivating are very important...
