class time

Are classes are only 3 weeks long and the students all have name badges on. This is required.

BEING A MOTIVATOR

I believe our task as a motivator has become a difficult one when dealing with generation Y students. They seem to be less focused and need more guidence to stay on task. More individual attention does not seem to help. My fear is that when we become more flexible to accommodate thier mindset, we tend to make allowances that seem to be counter productive, but if we don't we loose thier interest. Has Anyone else encountered this problem?

percentages of a teacher

In my 8 years of teaching I've learned several things, but one of the things I'll never forget is that each instructor should be 10% advisor, 10% friend, 10% comedan, 20% disiplinarian, 30% actor, 20% roll model. You may not agree wih the percentages I gave to this, but thats what makes us all different. The fact is that you cant be JUST one of these. You have to have a little of all of them if yopu want to suceed in this industry,

I'm First

I am always in my classroom before any of my students arrive, this gives me an opportunity to be there when they start to come into class. I find that i can then greet students as they enter my classroom which is an icebreaker for them and myself.

Instructor Roles

Instructors who lead the student's first class on campus have an important role in setting expectations. It's very important the instructor models professionalism in every aspect of student interaction; this sets the expectation of professionalism for the entire lentgh of the program. Students who follow the instructor's example and 'model' this level of professionalism have a good chance of being successful. Instructors who are rather loose (language, punctuality, dress, etc.) almost set the students up for failure, as the student will have a significantally more difficult time on campus and in the workplace if they 'model' these examples of unprofessional behavior.

Make sure your parachute is packed before you jump out of the plane

I have recently within the last year started performing my lectures without using the powerpoints we are given. I feel that the power points hamper my ability to deliver the subject matter at times due to the way it was organized, since I was not the one who organized it. I have been performing these using lecture, hand written notes on the board, tree diagrams, visual aids, tangible physical parts and pieces. I started using the power point more as a way to summarize everthing i talked and discussed with the students during the lecture, rather than as a crutch for teaching by. Don't misunderstand though powerpoints can be a valuable tool, but they are just a tool. This method use took me about a year and a half of teaching with it to get it to the point that I feel is better than trying to follow a scripted powerpoint. It requires a whole lot of lesson planning that I had to review and revise almost every 3 week phase to ensure that I was maximizing my effectiveness. I still don't believe I am done with it. Teaching, just like learning is an ongoing process. Preparation is a key factor to everything. I have torn up, thrown away more note pads and 3x5 cards with things that didn't work as planned or as well as i had hoped than i'd care to admit. The point being no matter what make sure that you actually have a plan, that plan is your "parachute".

Trying not to be a 'pal'!!!

I would say that the whole notion of being a friend vs. being a pal is important. This is my first year teaching, and I've come to realize (the hard way!) that being too close can lead to problems. Basically, the students begin to think of you as a peer, and then they don't respect the rules of the class room because they feel that it doesn't apply to them anymore! Anyone else have this problem?

Instructing to the different styles.

Even tho i have been hearing about these learning styles for years now i always forget them. I am a good instructor but if i try and think am I reaching this style or that syle i reach none becuase my focus is not on the class. But every time i read the styles i find out that I am doing what i am supposed to do according to the experts. How can you do this you may ask very easy make the class Fun and if you are not excited about what you are saying neither are the students. Show pictures if applicable have them, hold the item in their hands, relay stories about real life work experience, have a handout that you use and follow, and have projects. Wow this is easy I do all this and in one class so am I effecting all the students, according to the pros I am.

Safety

How would you deal with students that think safety is a funny topic?. In my career field ive seen several accidents and a few deaths, I want them to have an understanding of safety without it being a joke, or scaring them. I have found a pretty good system, But a person always has room for another perspective.

Experience

When planning to teach a new class there's no substitute for experience. I try to find another instructor with experience in the new course I'm going to teach. A few questions and a few minutes can fill lots of the empty spaces in your planning. How long did this take? What was your approach to this topic? This seems like a long lecture, do you have any suggestions to break things up? It may seem like cheating, but I call it using your head!

Wait time

I ask a lot of questions during class to keep students involved. However, I know that sometimes I don't use appropriate wait time. I am going to try and pay more attention as to how long I wait for a student’s response before I go to the next student or answer ot myself. I thought this module had some helpful tips.

Teaching Philosophy

When I started here one of the established instructors Dan Poor put it best. Here we use a method that is used very effectively in the military and the medical fields. We tell them; we show them and then we let them. All different styles are utilized just not all at the same time. It seems to me that it is up to us on what to use as far as activities to make that happen. Talking to your fellow instructors and your superiors and whatever recourse that you has available is helpful. Always keep searching and never stop trying to improve.

Powerpoints

Greetings, I truly enjoy creating and presenting powerpoints to my class. These outlines can help students with various learning styles. There are no time limits so I can stop the presentation to explain.

Model Manage and Motivator

This was a great refesher. I try to teach professionalism in the class room because of todays standards. I know that "shop talk" is no longer welcome in the work place. Being on time, prompt, clean, and ready to work is very important in todays work place; most employers that I know complain about emplyees not ready to work by 8:00. This will also aply to us the instructors.

Types of Tests

I believe that it is critical to understand the level of education the learner has before submitting tests for a curriculum (Diagnostics). For instance, the Community College level freshman year student is often less likely to have the critical writing skills that a credited 4 year degree studnt may have. Thus, it may be impractical to offer more essay type questions to these students.

about myself

when i tell students about myself i always let them know that by hearing about my mistakes or something i did the hard way they might be able to avoid some of the thing i went through with my business

About yourself

I was just wondering when I took instructor training, They told me to share something about myself. It sounded like a good idea to me. The first couple of times I tried that it backfired on me. The students took the little I told them about me and my experiences, and used it against me in a variety of ways. Has this happened to other new teachers as well. And I just quit telling them about my backround. the problem went away.

Keep them thinking.

When a student asks a question I look at what they are asking and doing at the time. I then ask them a question about the subject in a different way to get them thinking on their own. I do this for several questions to see how they answer and then say "When you are out working and have a question think back to me and come up with another question to kick your own thoughts and with this I hope youo find your own answer".

Delivery of Information

OK it is plain and simple we as educators are actors. We have to keep the attention of the class for the time they are in there. With this we are like actors we are showing them a story so to say. The examples of the delivery are the ones that we should use I had to laugh because going thru this section i saw myself and did not even realize that I was doing things the right way. When applied I feel that these techniques work well. Not much more to add to this other than it works well for me.

The Art of Questioning

Questioning is basic to good communications.
