I teach things that are very hands on but there is also theory behind it. Sometimes I find it difficult to do both to those students who are very Kinesthetic. Any suggestions how to get the theory part to those students?

I have had a diffcult time with some of the cirriculum that I have been given to work with because some of the material do not match the power points.

How do you manage a student that has no respect for you at all. Talks to you any type of way.

We are continually having a problem with this particular Cohort of students when it comes to tardiness and attendance. The guidelines have all been laid before them, the examples have all been set, from a professionalism standpoint the bar has been set high. Our issues come from the students have little to no regard on implementing these standards themselves, which causes for major classroom interruptions and lots of missed information. I would love some feedback as to positive ways others have handled or dealt with some of these similar issues.

Geez Louis! I am a fairly new adjunct clinical instructor who also helps with various lecture classes. I have been working on one lecture for a class period and it has almost overloaded my brain. Hats off to the a,axing teachers that have lecture style classes on a daily and weeklY basis. I am LEarning more and more I am a hands on learner and definitely feel my best suit in teaching is in the clinical setting. Very thankful that the clinic is where I am able to implement all of the "knowledge" students are learning through their lecture style courses. I am also able to help students, who are also hands on learners, to process through the information received in class and apply to the clinical setting.

Hi, how would you encourage quieter students who frequently decline participating in group discussions?

I think it's good to expose each student to all types of learning styles in order for everyone to understand the course material. The other option for smaller intimate class size is to present the material to each student in their own learning style. This obviously will not work with larger classes, but it may nuture those students in the small classes to achieve their goals better in the real world.

Does anyone have pointers on teaching for the first time?

I am always looking for new methods to enhance active learning in the classroom. I like anything that involves small group preparation, student research and presentation of their findings, and anything that encourages them to excel on their own and think critically. Beyond the games and small group discussions that many of us do, does anyone have a gem to share with us?

Being prepared for lessons, taking the necessary continuing education classes as often as they're offered.

At my institution we are required to lecture 15 minutes then a hand-on activity for 15 minutes (preferably a group assignment). I have noticed that this is effective but can cause distractions depending on the group which you may have. For those that have used groups discussions, which is more effective, working in pairs or 3s.

As educators, learning in ongoing. Should we be looked down upon if we are unable to answer a specific question. I am aware that no one knows everything. But working within todays society people are judgmental, especial to those that have titles.

I find it helps to work with them one on one sometimes, while still envolving others.

It is very important for the instructor to know the course material to provide the best knowledge to there student.

According to my experience Open Questions are good only while teaching if you ask in Test,students don't like it.

The first class meeting is important because this meeting sets the tone for how things are going to flow. The instructor-student relationship is imperative for student success.

Would you use an Essay test for someone going for a commercial license?

Some students insist they know more than you do. Or they have a better situation tpo discuss than you do. What do you do for that student?

Open ended question are great! I enjoy using them because it makes the student think. Part of my job is to make the student apply themselves and open ended questions are the way to do so.

Clear goals and objectives guide a course from start to finish for students to participate in the fullness of the course experience.
