Cross Cultural Communication skills and your international students

In teaching adults from different cultures, the instructor must be able to adapt to deal with those differences. Pre-testing can help alleviate language barrier and some knowledge based issues, but it would be well worth the time to invest in cross cultural communications training for the instructor. It also applies to teaching adults from different professional background... i.e. each profession has its own culture and specific language. (police, nurses, military, engineers, teachers....)

Extra credit.

Is that right give extra credit for students miss the class, giving to them a change to make up the class?

Assignment too dificult for students

When the instructor see the class is not understanding the task you are teaching, is that possible we break down the task to make then understand the class?

Training

When the instructor have a training in classroom all the students have to be in class? Sometime some students are not interested in have some kind of training....

Field Trip

Can Field trip for anykind of class?

Being prepared for class

I engage a few students to help me prepare for my demonstration the following day. This helps me be prepared and gets the students interested in tomorrows work. After a few days of this I will have students volunteering at the beginning of class to help out.

Using a mentor system

When I started teaching, I asked everyone on the staff questions. I think a mentor system would be a great way to share ideas and foster improvement in design and delivery. Before I take this idea further, does anyone have any drawbacks that they could think of?

testing

To keep students from missing scheduled test, my make up test are 50 fill in the blank, essay, or all true false. I hardly ever have students that want to take make up test. All students are told about make up test the first day of class.

Pre-testing

when it comes to testing on the surgical instruments for ST program, I always have an open lab and student on student tutoring before test days. This helps my students perform better when it's test day.

power point

how do you add power point to lab classes! I feel like I don't have enough time to add this to my classes.

field trips

I take all my core classes on a filed trip to our local hospitals so they can see for them selves exactly what field they are in and make sure this is the career right for them.

Late assignments

Students need to be responsible for the actions. They should be able to make up the test or assignments, but late points should be added to assignments, and a revised test given when they return.

Anticipating problems

Students and Instructors need to have several opinions for their teaching objectives. Students all learn in a different way. Problems and issues arise all the time. An Instructor has to be fexible while still teaching what is required for the class. Daily objectives are subject to change.

PP Presentations

PP Presentations are to help an Instructor present the material. The PPPresentation is not the main teaching format.

Quest speakers

Quest speakers are an added bonus to the class. The students can hear real life stories about their career opportunities

Short topics

In my accounting class students like to learn one thing and then get it down so that we can build on it in the future.

Power Point

My students really appreciate the Power Point presentations! They seem to get a better understanding of the chapter that way.

Field Trips

I think that field trips are an excellent way to get students involved. It lets them see the "real world" and how things are outside of the classroom.

Extra Credit

Personally, I have always utilized extra credit as both a reward for students doing well and for those that are legitimately trying, but still falling short. The motivation this provides those students is excellent and typically the students take full advantage of the opportunity.

Pretesting Learners

I am in favor of pretesting learners for one primary purpose. I have heard too many times that learners get frustrated because they are not ready for a particular course and subsequently, the learners merely figure that the college is attempting to get more money out of them. What are your thoughts on this?
