This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Virtual Internships --> Why Utilize Virtual Internships

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I was suprised by the NACE survey that noted that IBM hires approximately 2,000 interns annually and converts more than half of them to full-time hires.  The volume of full time position that transition from internship positions was surprising.

I learned that students need to be active participants during virtual internships. The training helped me understand the importance of setting goals and tracking progress. I also learned how to communicate clearly with supervisors and ask for feedback. It showed me how to stay organized and make the most of each task. I realized that reflection is a key part of learning in a virtual space. The training gave me tools to stay engaged and motivated. It made me see that success depends on how much effort and intention I bring to the experience.

I learned that virtual internships open doors to global opportunities that I might not have access to locally. They let me gain real experience without needing to relocate or commute. I saw how they can fit around my schedule while still helping me build valuable skills. The module also explained how virtual internships can expand my professional network across different countries and industries. I had not thought about how flexible and diverse these roles could be. Now I understand why more people are turning to them as a serious step in their career journey.

In this module, we learned about the importance of virtual internships as inclusive and flexible opportunities for students. We also explored the challenges of working in virtual environments, the role of ICTs, and how to build professional networks. We understood that VIs are a growing trend and a key entryway into the workforce.

I realized that VI can take the place of wasted company time. I had no idea how much time could be saved by directing the tasks to VI instead of employees.

I learned the value of virtual internships. Although VI's may not make sense for certain clinical aspects, for healthcare management, IT, coding, etc. could be beneficial for the organization and students.

It is important to evaluate the profile of possible virtual internships. Although virtual internships are innovative and attractive, it is important to evaluate the organizational capacity of the intern, the ability to work with minimal effort and the level of commitment to be able to work remotely without seeing each other. affected by distractions outside of work hours. The world has changed and so have the ways of working.

Medical Coding and Billing students are often interested in obtaining remote opportunities.  Having students preparing and searching early in the educational process is an important step in locating an online externship that could lead to a career opportunity!

I've recently completed a BSBHCM fully online and it was a very interesting experience to say the least. I am glad I did it, but the concept of internship virtually has always boggled my mind, particularly for settings like physical therapy or medical rehabilitation. I like the disavantages listed here because it opened my mind to a few challenges I didn't consider before.

This idea of a VI is truly intriguing. Those with disabilities could really benefit from a VI.

VIs can be a true test to see if someone is really prepared for the real life job.

A student will not have to take time to travel and may not have to change their class schedule.  A student will learn how to work with minimal supervision.

I agree with some of the comments. Virtual Internships are here to stay. If notheing else, COVID has forces schools and facilities to improve technology skillsand analize teaching methodologies.

There are both pros and cons with using VIs.  One of the downfalls is the lack of in-person interaction and networking.

There are definately benefits and drawbacks of VI's. As a person who usually enjoyed going to the office to feel a part of a team, and still go to the office (though there is less pressure to do so) to be seen as a part of the team, being remote only, would for me be limiting. Creative solutions for connecting and inclusion are really needed.

When companies opened the door to VI few years ago, they decided to keep it open forever. VI is here to stay.

In this module I learned about more virtual internship, its advantages and disadvantages.

Virtual internships promote a flexible work environment and can be accomodating for a lot individuals for various reasons.

Virtual Internships provide the opportunity to allow flexibility in the workplace. It decreases the overhead associated with building space and creates an environment that promotes work, family, and life balance.
