Catalogs are Critical

Catalogs are often mentioned throughout the course. What makes the catalog so valuable to both the student and a school employee?

Catalogs serve as a primary source of information related to institutional policy and procedure; academic outcomes, structure, and requirements; and required Disclosures. Having multiple documents without clear connections would make research difficult, if not impossible in some cases.

These are necessary for students to make well-informed decisions and be aware of their rights and responsibilities. They also gives staff members a reference guide that ensures they are acting with integrity, conducting themselves appropriately, and providing students and prospects with required information.

Catalogs provide both students and employees with a wealth of information. Having access to a catalog with detailed information about an institution empowers students and makes employees more knowledgeable.

The school catalog spells out expectations and policies that affect both students and the institution. It is the primary information resource on policy for the school.

Crystal,

You make a great point! Catalogs are a reflection of every facet of the educational facilities. An employee should always take great care to read and understand the catalog's content.

Kevin,

Welcome to the forum! You have mentioned many of the key reasons that catalogs are necessary. The catalog is the framework by which we deliver information to students and staff alike. If both parties will allow the catalog to serve as the conductor of their daily concert of activities they will operate by the standards of the institution.

The students need a hard copy of the schools expectations. There is an abundant amount of information covered in the enrollment process and it is essential that the student has a reference guide regarding support services, expectations, and responsibilities. We want to ensure that our students have all of the information necessary to make an informed decision and the catalog is an essential part of the process.

If a catalog is well written, it will answer all questions for a future student. A catalog should be so thorough that a student can find and understand answers without anyone really having to explain them.

Joyce,

Your point about a well written catalog is true. What methods should be put in place to ensure that a catalog is written well and easily comprehensible?

Cindy Bryant

Business Practices should be reviewing each catalog for any institution. There needs to be consistency, accuracy, and an informative format.

If a school's catalog meets all of the requirements of its accrediting and licensing bodies, it will provide both potential and current students the information necessary to make informed decisions regarding enrolling in the school and its programs.

The catalog sets out this information in an organized, predictable manner that school employees as well as outside agencies and individuals can reference with relative efficiency. By presenting information in standardized formats, students, regulators and other interested parties can readily make an "apples-to-apples" assessment of the information.

The school catalog provides students guidance of the school's policies and procedures, admissions and financial aid information, services available to students and other information that will help them make informed decisions. The catalog provides employees a reference for the school's policies and procedures and helps employees to stay informed which will help our students.

The catalog is valuable for giving tuition cost, procedures, services, class info,etc..information pertinent to the student.

Rita,

You are absolutely right! The catalog is the guiding document for every educational institution.

Cindy Bryant

Catalogs serve as a contract between the school and the student.

Catalogs are the"Bible" of an institution. It is imperative that it is accurate and updated in a timely fashion to reflect current policies. This will enable students to be able to make well informed decisions about their education and serve and a reference tool to employees about policies and procedures.

The catalog is one very good way to provide all disclosures and is often required by regulatory agencies down to specifying what must be disclosed.

Toni,

Hi! The catalog is the most important reference document for any organization. What do you think is the best way for students to be made aware of the catalogs value outside of the admissions process?

Cindy Bryant

catalog is the reference document for students and employees. this shoudl be the first place one /both look when there is a question regarding any policy and how to enforce it. employees must follow the standards as well. everyone, both employees and students will always be on the same page and there will be no questions or inconsistency

The school catalog is valuable both as a reference for student and the employee. Any questions about conduct or expectations for both the college and the program are address. This is especially useful when a student is not adhering to a policy. The student can be directed to the catalog page to review requirements.
