It can be tempting to use technological tools that I believe will be effective in communicating with students, but like this course is teaching us, it is important to get assessments from students to confirm the strengths or reveal the weaknesses of those tools.
Assess the tools to choose the right one, and solicit feedback from students about how it's working.
I have learned that using social media to interact students can be an effective tool for communication.
I have learned that tools outside of the standard methods (email, canvas, blackboard) can be used to interact with students. I realized that social media can, in some instances, be used to enhance classroom learning, especially if the class is smaller sized
I have learned about the need to investigate the communication tools properly. We need to be aware of the pros and cons as well as must get feedback to make changes if necessary.
The course examined many of the tools available to communicate more effectively with students at an individual level as well as for large groups. I came away with some ideas such as setting an email protocol with students at the start of class as well as using evaluation of the effectiveness of communication through the course. There is an option for a FAQ board available in my classes that I hadn't fully utilized and will consider making better use of this going forward.
Utilizing digital channels to communicate with students and address their questions is crucial for several reasons. First, it ensures accessibility and convenience, allowing students to reach out and get responses regardless of their location or time constraints. This flexibility supports diverse learning schedules and enhances student engagement.
Second, digital communication fosters a collaborative learning environment. Platforms like discussion boards, chat rooms, and social media groups enable students to interact with peers, share ideas, and clarify doubts collectively. This peer-to-peer interaction often leads to deeper understanding and retention of the material.
Additionally, digital channels provide a record of interactions and feedback, which can be referenced later. This documentation helps track student progress, identify recurring issues, and improve teaching methods over time.
Comment on Laura Mcdermott's post: Laura, this is a great point. I think part of the investigation is knowing the technology skill level of your students. There are excellent tools available for tech savvy students. However, I tend to teach adults who are starting college much later in life so they're often not up-to-date on the latest technology. I've learned that students can quickly become frustrated if they have to deal with recurring technical issues.
I have learned that there are many different options outside of email. Although it seems like common sense, I haven't considered all the other possibilities.
I have learned that obtaining feedback from students to assess the technology with ongoing feedback through the course so changes can be implemented immediately throughout the course so that the entire communication tool can be assess
I learned how to determine the correct technology devise
It is essential to know the generation to which our students belong, as this makes it easier to individualize treatment and communication strategies.
The importance of communication management is that it allows us to establish basic rules that help us maintain a harmonious and productive environment in our online interactions. By following these rules, we demonstrate consideration for others and avoid unnecessary misunderstandings or conflicts. It also allows you to enhance key aspects of communication such as the language used, the way of expressing oneself and behavior on digital platforms.
I have learned that I must know about the technological means of communication that I have as a teacher to communicate with students and that depending on the size of the groups I must make sure to choose the most suitable ones to guarantee that the communication will be of quality. Likewise, it is important to evaluate the use of each communication tool used because in this way we will know what impact it had on the interaction between teachers and students.
Investigate the best technology tool that can convey the content and give students what is needed.
Comment on Aricka McCauley's post: I think it's important to ask the students how they prefer to be communicated with. Some students rarely check their email but will easily respond to a text. We should always take a student-centered approach when considering the form of communication we're going to take.
This was a great course that covered many aspects of using online tools and resources in a classroom setting. It is important to determine what tools will work best for your course and your students before implementing tools. It is also important to ask for feedback from students throughout the course so any changes can be implemented immediately.
I have had success using social media within my course and I intend to use it going forward. As the course mentioned, social media is easy to implement because the students are already familiar with the platforms.
I have learned that there are many different types of tools that can be used for effective and efficient online communication. It is important to vet the tool before implementing it within your class. This enables the instructor to fully understand the limitations and functions of the selected tool.
