The synchronous and asynchronous discussion are important to student learning. Having both of these discussions on a daily basis keep students engaged and learning. The socializing at the begining and end of the class are important to students. I have found teaching online during this pandemic, the students need to be social with their friends in the class. Before we Sign off everyday we do a video chat, this keeps the students motivated in learning and keeping in touch with each other is very important.

Without the use of discussion, synchronous or asynchronous, it can be difficult to identify the at risk learning styles identified by Bergquist and Phillips. Therefore, discussion boards are a critical component of online learning. As I learn new concepts and techniques for online learning, I am constantly comparing this information to my experience as an online MSN student. The program I chose was very much independent with some opportunities for peer interaction. You could go through the entire program without interacting with anyone until reviewing your capstone project.

Learning how to implement asychronous and sychronous discussions and what type of information to use within each mode seems important.  Also instructor feedback in a timely manner is one of the most important tools for good repore with online students.

I've learned that you should use asynchronous communication for teaching course content, synchronous communication mainly in a one to one situation to further a single student's understanding of concepts, etc.  I found it instructive to learn about the different strategies in each communication mode that you can use to motivate students to pursue the courses objectives.  I'm not really sure that I will be implementing this at this point, but I feel that this is giving me a clearer understanding of the key things to look for and do to encourage student participation.

This was a good discussion about asynchronous and synchronous strategies for success.

It is important that we always give Feedback, it  should be worded in way to encourage participation, confidence, and motivation. Feedback, needs to be positive and contruted critisim if needed, but shoul always be in a way that is not discuraging for the student.

This module was helpful in learning how to get all students involved in discussions in an online course.  I think the use of discussion are very beneficial to online courses and the tips that were given will be very helpful.

This module has provided an understanding that even in an e-learning environment, it is important to take into consideration the students learning style. Having students placed in small groups will help students feel more comfortable participating.

I enjoyed the fact that feedback should be worded in a way that encourages students to participate more, to build their self confidence, and ultimately improve their motivational levels within the online courses.

I learned that feenback encourages partication, confidence and motivation among the students. The differences betwwen asynchronous and synchronous leearning and what each one is used for. Types of learning styles and their differences.

Keeping the discussiion board active and engaging helps ensure quality student learning and retention.  It is useful to use both synchronous and synchronous discussions with students.

Feedback is especially important in online learning due to the lack of face-to-face feedback found in the reg classroom. Monitoring discussion forums and providing individual feedback should be continuous.

It is better to use asynchronous discussions for core course content.  It allows for better participation.

I learner more than I even knew before very interesting and plan on adding a lot of suggested material.

Asynchronous discussions can be an effective way to bring more students to pariticate. Keeping the discussion focused and enticing as well as providing feedback is a good way to do this.

There are so many options for online learning.  A good balance is important and allows all learners opportunity to achieve.

Instructors should prepare students for class participation by providing netiquette rules. The recommendations to create chat sessions with small groups (5-6 students), time limit (30 minutes maximum), and prepare students with information and schedule well in advance set the stage for a successful chat.

What have you learned from this module?

I learned that it is more likely that students will interact in class discussions if they are likely to get rewarded. You should identify the students that do not participate. Create a less intimidating learning environment by assigning small group activities. Instructors should make sure that the comments are related to the course content. It is also important to keep sentences short and to the point.

How do you intend to apply it?

I plan on applying these techniques by assigning students in small group activities and identifying the shy students that do not participate. I will also reward students that do participate.

synchronous and asynchronous discussions are very important learning tools

Learning the difference between asynchronous and synchronous discussions was very helpful.  I self-reflected that I included small talk in my phone call conversations with students because it seemed like the appropriate thing to do.  It was nice to learn that this is recommended suggestion.
