I learned how to better use questions to actually teach in the classroom as a tool for lecture. Not just a tool for gauging the students understanding of the material, but also way to engage the students.
The importance of asking questions, encourage critical thinking and improvement in the delivery of instructions.
Asking students reflective questions ensure that they are retaining the pertinent information
While every instructor would like to use the Socratic method, it is challenging without 100% buy-in from the students. I often use reflection questions, e.g. what are the 3 most important concepts from this lecture. Students will share them and realize that everyone had differing opinions on what ay be important, thus learning that everything is important.
What have you learned from this module and how do you intend to apply it?
More on reflection utilized in the closing discussion. Include the students by asking: What did we learn? What was the main point? etc.
I have learned methods of engaging the student in reflection of the content and their knowledge using the 13 points offer in this section. Asking certain questions which can be built on will help direct me, as the educator, on the improving my lecturing skills to help the learners understand the content
Why ask questions? Helps teachers to decide where to take the class, encourages the students to utilize critical thinking, and provides a quick, informal assessment.
Basic types of questions: Open and closed questions.
