Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Should Discussion Boards include an edit button?

Should students be allowed to edit their response on a discussion board once it has been submitted?

Add-Ons to a Course Syllabus

Students seldom review the entire course syllabus. I like to add highlighted text to important components of the syllabus and I also like to add different bullets and clip art as well. What are some extra add-ons that can be added to a course syllabus that will entice more students to read the syllabus?

Course Discussion Questions as Assignments

I really like the suggested practice of classifying discussion questions as assignments. Without that, I think it could be too casual and not directed towards the learning outcomes. It helps me get better results when I state the purpose of the assignment, the relevance to the learning objectives, etc. This helps me connect with the students. The assignments are clearer and make more sense.

On-site visits as part of multimedia in on-line course

I consider on-site visits--by students to locations where they see course contents demonstrated in real life--to be an important part of an on-line course, no matter what the course topic is. Does anyone have experience with this? Perhaps students could do an audio-visual project, along with journaling, to apply their knowledge of a course module, lesson or topic, and share it with the rest of the class? This intellectual interaction would test comprehension and provide focus.

learners

it is great to be prepared to our best standards to give the learners the best experiece when learning on-line.

synchroronous and asynchronous

both types of discussions are great learning experiences.

STUDENTS LEARNING ONLINE

THE CHATS ARE IMPORTANT SO THEY CAN LISTEN TO THE INSTRUCTOR AND OTHER STUDENTS OPINIONS

Designing and developing online courses

as myself as an instructor students can too get great results by taking on-line courses it helps to retain alot of information.

Presentations

Students are willing and encouraged to work on end of the semester presentations, and what they learn online is extremely valuable in that aspect.

Internet Learning

Students really get creative through dynamic internet learning, it's what they know, so they immerse themselves in it.

It's like the Energizer Bunny...

In the design, development, and implementation of online course content, I have found that the iterations do not stop at an artificial or programmed point in time. Much as in the model of Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) or TQM, we have to keep improving and evolving the course design. Richard

Preparation

I think one key to online success is making sure that students do not fall behind. This creates many problems, and often these problems can not be corrected. What are your opinions?

What a great technology!

I would just love to have access to an electronic white board. I was watching a lesson on youtube the other day about drawing Lewis dot structures. The lesson was fully understandable from the white board with no visualization of the intructor. It was fantastic and I am sure that the professor did not use nearly all of the capabilities.

Less than technologic technology students...

I have been working diligently to use more technology in my courses at a local technical college for the spring term. I have been very surprised at the number of students who are not as savvy as I expected and was told they were. I have had a ridiculous number of students who don't use their school email accounts to their advantage and who have difficulty understanding how to submit work electronically. Has anyone else had these difficulties? Are you pulling some of your non-traditional and economically depressed students by the nose into the blended environment?

Should the instructor be the course administrator?

My school is starting a brand new online course. This will be our first one ever. I, as the course instructor, provided all the lecture materials, quizzes, assignments, etc. We have one or two people who work as the administrator of the online course. They have more powers in terms of creating a new course, setting the enrollment time frames, the course time frames, etc. Do you think, the instructor should be doing all that, rather than someone else? I believe that if the instructor has more "hands-on", the instructor will understand all the ins and outs better.

Cheating

I do think that when a student takes an exam while using e-learning it is not so much knowledege that the student obtains. Student can easily have an open book or notes to pass the test.

Agree

I agree that for students to engage in this kind of learning, it has to be made simple and easy to understand.

Learning Environment

There are other online applications that this course so far has not focused on. Email isn't the only way to receive assignments. In online classes for years now, there are often "drop boxes" for assignments and areas to return edited assignments or to post comments. It works better with a small class, but I have both taught and been a student online where everyone could talk. This section of this course seems to want to focus on the idea that pretty much things that are done in a traditional classroom can likely be done online as well.

Creatiive design of a course

How can the use of creative media enhance student learning?

Student Involvement in Online vs. Traditional Courses

Many students initially think that online courses are much easier than traditional in class courses. How can professors communicate to students the need for them to spend substantial time participaing in each online course?
