grading

We have a EGB (Electronic Grade Book)it helps out a lot. Makes Our life easier, more time to help the students.

Time

I would like a 28 hour day!!

Reduce your stress.

We as instructors need to reduce our stress by letting some things just roll off our back. Don't let the little things make you crazy. Remember there are some things we can control and some we can't. For those that we can't control don't take it to heart so much, find a way to make it work the best you can and be ok with that. If we put too much on our self we will go crazy and loose contol of that which is in our control. Our thoughts, knowledge, patience and experiences. We teach, our students learn, so don't sweat the small stuff, be flexable.

Electronic Grade Books

We have been using EGB's (Electronic grades books) for some time now, and I can not give it enough credit for helping with the grading process. We also have lots of other items included in our grade book that helps us day to day. I would only wish all could bennifit from this resource. I have not seen nor tried the online test sites, for not only making test's but electronic test's and grading. I'm excited toi look at these sites and see if they would fit in to our program.

Personal problems in the classroom.

I think it is a big mistake to talk about personal problems with the class, it is just not appropriate or professional.

Student anger

I have found that when you ask a student about there anger, most times it has nothing to do with you or your institution.

First day

First day you can get a feel for you students the ones that are late, the condtion of there books from the last class, who sits int he back of the class. When set the pace for the class it will go very well for you.

Dealing with students in today times

The student that you may see today having pressure from all sides of life to do well and for you to help is a great challenge.

Listening to students comments

WE as instructors think we have to be over the top with our students, but if take time with them thay will see how easy they can learn somthing hard

Positive Thinking

I agree Journaling is a very good Idea and should be added to this course as a stress reducer. I have been using this technique. I know friends will listen; however, I do not want to create a negative environment for anyone. This brings up another technique; positive thinking. I do not dwell on negative things; I set my mind on things that are good and how to turn a negative into a positive.

Time management a personal priorty

To be in the carreer school enviroment time management should be a personal priority. We have to be able to organize ourselves, our labs and our students if we expect them to do the same. At my school we are always talking about shop management, and time management. The student needs to priortize projects to be completed in a certain amount of time, and the given part of the formula is the amount of time they have for the day in an active lab enviroment. We as instructors need to guide them to help them learn how to do this, easier said than done, but if the instructor can't organize his own world how can he help shape theirs. I take careful steps in trying to stay currant with my to do list, and this helps in an active lab enviroment. Things that I seem to take for granted, and how I organize steps and procedures, students need to learn how to do these things and need guidance to do it. Thy look at you and say "Wow how did you get that done so fast" Time management and shop management skills are very much needed in all aspects of life.

Large office

I have found that being in a large office with much coming and going of students and other instructor very difficult. I'm taking all my grading home. My family does not understand why this has to be. Any good thought on another way?

How do you handle test reviews?

I was wondering how some of the other instructors involved in this forum handle their test reviews. I tend to have a review guide that the students work on in-class the day before the exam. I encourage them to work together, but allow them to work individually if they so choose. Following the group work, if there are any questions they couldn't find the answer to, we address those in-class. While this is effective, it tends to get a little noisy which impedes the progress of some students, so I'm curious as to some other effective methods of review.

Reinforcing the lecture

I find the opportunity to reinforce the lecture material with actual tangible findings cements the theory to the activity in the student's mind. After an active lab session, I have an A.A.R. - an After Action Review . What did we see in and did it in fact agree with the lecture material and with "real-world" issues.

Explian Respect to students

I find it helpful to let the students know that respect is not something that is just given that it is something that is earned meaning that your must be respectful in order to be respected.

Dealing with challanging students

I find it works many times to have a private discussion with a student to make them aware that you are unhappy with the distracting behavior alot of time they might not even have known that there behavior was being distracting to both you and your class and they stop.

Making priority lists

Just wondering what method others use for the actual priority lists. I like to use post-its of differing sizes. These are normally located beside my computer.the only draw back to this is it can seem cluttered at times! let me know your methods...thanks

What about investment to improve time management?

While prioritizing is essential with time management, it still takes a personal investment and interest to truly succeed with whatever the task is at hand. I must say, I am a masterful list maker; lists keep me sane and on track. I know how to prioritize and what goals are urgent; however, unless I truly believe in what I need to accomplish, even though it may be important and pressing, I do not come away with a sense of pride or satisfaction. It is for this reason that I am able to make lists and prioritize, accomplish the tasks, yet still find myself stressed and unfilled. At times, this can also lead me to procrastination. Can anyone else relate?

Career School Stress

I see many of the participants in this course are dealing with students that think they are buying their degree; a common issue for career schools. Many career school students cannot get accepted in a traditional college. Consequently, if they want to get a degree and or further their education they seek out career schools. I concentrate on the fact that at least they took a step to change their life. There are some students that think they just need to pay the bill to get their degree; however, I find that most do try to get the work done. Working for a career school is more challenging than working for a traditional college because of the type of students and the school retention requirements for continued employment. I concentrate on the students that are trying and document all efforts toward getting other students to participate. The school’s reputation will come to fruition in the workplace by the quality of students graduated.

Plagiarism

Our school has a student judiciary council that mandates the first plagiarism offense gets you a zero on the assignment. The second is a zero for the class... the third you're out of the program! It's quite severe.
