Getting the 411 on the Student

You have to find out what is the base problem with student. Then you can proceed with finding a resolution

Student behavior

With Center Stage students I load then down with valid work and help a little aling the way. It real, ( Humble ).

Real World

You must make sure that the students understand that in the real work place, excuses for not having their assigned duties completed on time are not well received

Late Assignments

I do not like the take the hard line approach but sometimes I think that it is best to just say "no assignment, no points". Unless something terrible has happened liek a death in the family. In high school students get the hand held. In college, a place they are paying for, I feel that if we allow late assignments even at a less point percetage, we are not really helping them. Just my thoughts.

PLAN, WRITE, & READ

It is easy to plan and proritize when you take the time and practice reading your list/calander every morning. 30 days makes it into a habit!!!

Eating right and vitimans

I think that many of us want to go to a drive thru and eat because it is quick when we are down to the wire on a project. I now balance it out with fruit, vitamins and water during long projects. It has really helped. I don't end up sick at the end.

dealing with unfocused students

I have not had any experience with this, but had to deal with students who complain about instructors and find that they are blaming someone or something else on their poor performance. For these cases, I try to take to the student about time management, pin point where they can fit time in for their course work, sometimes, it does require giving up some freedoms. I usually share my story so they can relate it with their own lives. Finally, talk about the overall goal of graduation. Usually that gets some motivation for them to build on.

respect

WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF BEING A INSTRUCTOR I HAD AN ISSUE WITH SOME STUDENTS. WHAT A TEST! I FELT BY TAKING THEM ASIDE AND EXPLANING THE ISSUE I GAINED ALOT OF RESPECT FROM THEM. THUS KEEPING THE ISSUE BETWEEN US.

LEVELS

ANY TIPS FOR STUDENTS ON DIFFRENT LEARNING LEVELS?

CENTER STAGE

I HAVE A CENTER STAGE STUDENT IN MY CLASS THAT BRINGS A LOT TO THE TABLE. THE OTHER KIDS LOVE HIM AND THE DISCUSSIONS HAVE BEEN BENEFICAL TO EVERYONE. I MAKE SURE WE STAY ON TRACK AND THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THE ASSIGNMENTS. I FEEL HE HAS HELPED THE WHOLE CLASS.

STAYING ON TRACK

I HAVE A STUDENT THAT HAS NO INTENTION OF GETTING PRATICAL WORK DONE FOR CREDITS. I HAVE TALKED TO HIM ABOUT THE REQUIREMENTS AND THAT HE IS FACING OVER CONTRACT FEES IF NOT DONE ON TIME. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Instructor Experience

I have come to know that it is better to be a teaching professional than a professional teacher when it comes to technical courses. Students tend to respect the experience factor.

Angry Students

I have found that simply listening to a student vent can help to defuse the situation. Sometimes they just need to vent after a trying day at work or certain home problems.

common mistakes of instructors

we all make mistakes its what we learn form them this course helps me-

challanging students

the information in this course will help me deal with this

unfocused students

there are students that are just not interseted in what there doing, or are here just to skate by. these students just can't be reached. there just wasting there money

assignments

I leaned a lot of good information, assignments were a constant annoyance, I have a good understanding of how to handle this issue

Blaming others

I try to get the student to understand that in the professional world when you are given an assignment to accomplish, you don't have the luxury to lay the blame on someone else.

Late Assignments

I like to use a sliding scale on late work, usually 10 points per week up to 50 points. This gives the student every opportunity to submit the work and is fair to the other students.

Different learning styles and levels

I sometimes have students that become distracting to their peers because they are at a more advanced level and finish early. What are some ways that folks manage this issue?
