new instructor

If your a new instructor taking over midway what are some good approaches to take.

taking over for another instructor 3/4 through class

students very upset over new instructor taking over, very disliking of teaching any way different from other instructor, any suggestions.

General inappriate behavior

Being put in as a replacement instructor, on the last 3rd of their learning degree. They all exhibit some back behaviors, that other students in the other classes are not doing on this wide of a scale. My approaches are a little stricter/less laid back then prior instructor. How do I gain control coming in as a replacement this late in the game without rebellion.

Excellent material!

Excellent material! I am one of "new" instructors . I have been in nursing for 35 years , so I have lots of experience but need to learn teaching skills.

Dealing with Challenging Students

In this module we talk about the challenging student and I try to work with the students that want to be the center of attention. This can be challenging because it is difficult to sometimes get the student to understand that they are taking from the class time and this then is frustrating their fellow students. Can anyone give me some ideas of what worked for you?

Setting the stage for success

How do you set the stage for success on the first day of class? I review the syllabus word for word and ask the class to mirror back the objectives of the course so I know that they understood. I have found that the students do use the excuse of I did not understand the assignment or what it was that I expected in the course. Does anyone have examples of best practices that could help me with this?

Stress

How much do vacations really help? Or do they hurt?

Introducing Myself as well as the course objective

The very first day is a long one. Intentionally. I introduce myself completely. In other words, I reveal my years of exprience, why I love teaching and a litte on my family life. Just to let them know I am human. Then, I have them to introduce themselves and give a little background. This gives not only me but the other students a chance to know where everyone comes from and maybe see how they relate to being in front of others. Then when I have something more in common when I hear their stories then I expand on myself a little more. This does make them a little more comfortable with me. Then the teaching begins with no problems.

Seperating being a teacher and a MOM

So many times I have come across students, not only in my class but other classes, that they have so many issues. When you do have their respect they still want to lean on you for advice. You can give only so much help before recommending them to student services. They are adult learners but you do get those you have to be a "MOM" at times. I have learned that students tend to be harsh on themselves if they don't get an A. One course that I teach, I do tell them that the course is hard and getting an A is hard to do but, if they do what I say such as study, get organized and dedicate themselves more than usuall than they did for the other courses then they can get that A. I show them the road to get there. Some think its an automatic so they get dissappointed. It does work for me.

Handling Both Disruptive and Cheating Students

I have mentioned this before, I seperate each student regardless during all test. After 3 years of teaching and of course I was a student along time ago, I have seen ever attempt at both behaviors. At times, I feel like a mom watching and correcting each behavior. You do listen and try to either help or correct the situation. All behavior's do need to be dealt with care. Do bring in a Supervisor when confronting with a student.
