Having your supervisor as a student

I will have my superivisor as a student in my Phlebotomy class next semester. We are friends and I know I have to seperate my personal relationship with her for the class. I know I can do this on a professional level but I am open to any suggestions that will help me with my upcomming semester.

are field trips a good idea?

attendence

I believe that time management is something we all have a bit of an issue with from time to time. A little patienece and understanding from both sides is needed.

The excuse towel . . . .

Years ago, as an online student, I used to write down all the excuses students gave when not completing their homework. When I graduated, I always joked I had enough to embroider me a bath towel. Now, as an online instructor I sometimes feel like Colonel Blake on MASH dealing with all of Clinger’s excuses and deaths in his family. I used to keep track of all the excuses students gave me, and try to follow up. This quickly became an impossible task. However, there has to be a best practice for dealing with the multiple excuse students give for not submitting their homework. The best one I ever received for a student not submitting her online assignment, “my dog ate my homework”. When I reminded the student she should use her back up plan, then she could have still submitted her work, she laughed at me as said, that was my back up plan. My puppy ate my Flash Drive and I keep all my homework on that flash drive. I had to then remind her to never store her work in just one location. The back-up plan is to prevent late assignments, and when you don’t have double locations, you don’t have a back-up plan. By the way, my excuse towel could easily be an excuse California King Blanket. What suggestions, thoughts or ideas can you share on student excuses for not doing their work?

Dealing with a vulgar student . . .

How do you deal with a vulgar student in a classroom, either online or in a traditional classroom? In one of my online classes I had a very vulgar student. Asking the student to read the student code of conduct did not work. She came to class unhappy, after a fight with her boyfriend and she took it out on me and everyone else in the online class. In a matter of just a few moments, she threw the “F” bomb into our online seminar. I was mortified; I had never had a student treat me or her classmates in such a manner. If I asked her a question, she would retaliate; if I ignored her she would complain that I was ignoring her. I was in a no-win situation. I was able to call my supervisor and ask her to join in on my session and help me corral the student, however, even the added attention from her made the student lash out.

time savers

I am sorry to be so "anal", but when people misspell words, don't use the proper tense and poor grammar and pucuation, I have to take more time reading it. Please do others the favor of writing in proper grammar, etc. to save them time. Thanks

Missing a final exam...

I currently have a student that purposely missed her final exam, and then after making arrangements to re-take the exam, missed that exam as well. I think that I should able to not pass this student, but she is using the excuse that her eyeglasses were stolen. It's frustrating!

How to manage administrative and student needs

Is this difficult?

Course Requirements

Should an instructor give thier grading rubric to a student so they can write to the rubric?

examples in class

I use power point presentations in my class and internet videos as well. This helps the student see and understand an actual dental procedure.

Students Sharing Grades and FERPA

I am under the impression that having students grade one another's papers is a direct violation of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Students are not supposed to have access to grades other than their own. Just wanted to bring it up...

Getting students to raise their hand before answering a question

I have trouble with entire class speaking out the answer to my questions even though I repeatedly ask them to raise their hands before answering so everyone can hear their answer. Any suggestions?

Young instructors

Being a young instructor i find that not only am i younger than some of my student but also the same age as some of the students. is there a way to show those older students that i am there for a reason?

Managing Late Assignments

I always allowed students the benefit of doubt in extending time to make-up assignments. I see the relevancy in holding them to dealines as a preparation for real world scenarios in their chosen fields. I am enlighten.

WoW!

I'm sorry I am somewhat of a defeatist. It seems almost your doom if you do or you are doom if you don't. I would think that people mature grow into self mgmt of time. I did. I know it's always that exception. I must confess at one time or another I identify heavily with that state of Immediancy. I hate to put things off, they seem to just pile-up in the aftermath. Anyhow, I agree the to-do-list is a great time management strategy. One question if you create a list mentally does that lessen the idea of a to-do- list? Ummm, Inquiring minds are wondering.

How to take control of my time.

It is important to give your time on your own terms despite the demands of those around you.

Answering questions - same student

While going over the homework scenarios, I select students to read the scenario and ask specific information directed to that student. It never fails that one of my 'seasoned' students will always say the answer out loud. I have specifically used the reader's name when asking the questions which sometimes works. I feel if I speak to my 'seasoned' student on the side, she may think I am discriminating as she is an older student from another country.
