Personal space with an angry student.

What is the best way to handle an angry, disruptive student who is limiting the space between his body and yours?

Students that challenge your grading.

What is the best way to handle a combative student who questions your grading rubric?

Engaging the Students

How much does making the course seem fun, get in the way of the task of the academic learning process? How does the tone of the class reflect how seriously they'll take the work?

shy students

The criminal justice field is no place for shy students. Personally I try to establish a relationship with the student and slowly incorporate the student by reading in class, answering question. Finally I place them with a more outgoing student or in a study group.

Mantaining a Professional Image

Since I am in the medical profession and a program dierctor, to set an example for my students, I come to class wearing my professional scubs. I feel this sets a standard for my class to start looking the part of a medical professional. My demeanor in class is kept strictly professional when we are discussing work related practices. There are times when we as a group do have fun in class to keep things on a lighter moment.

Dealing with disruptive students

In dealing with this type of student it is important to separate them from the group. Its then important to listen. If we can determine the cause of the students problem we can then help them. If the student continues they must be removed for the good of the class.

Reducing student cheating

What I do agree with is standing in the back of the room. At times I also walk around the room, pausing for a short while, this has proven to deter a possible cheater.

Capturing student attention

I personally find that when a class becomes bored with the topic I add humor in my class to get their attention. I also add personal stories from past work experiences to drive home a point.

Use current day to day examples

In the field of criminal justice it is extremely relevant for students to know whats current. The law changes daily and students must be prepared.

Showing examples of student work

I have asked former students for permission to show future classes their completed term papers. The new class was very impressed with some of the work showed. This practice helped to eliviate some stress for new students who have never done a term or it has been a long time since high school.

EVER TRIED ZEN BEFORE

the danger comes when people don't realize how much stress they accumulated. the Buddha was right, you have to create a balance betwen two worlds, the one within and the one around us. understanding ourselves and the environment we live in, allow us to take account of our own actions and readress those if needed.stress.. is just a consequence of those actions. if we can control our life, then we should be abble to control stress. the question is: can we really control our life, or does life control us?..

text messaging in class

How do we stop students from text messaging in class. I find it is a huge problem.

Respect or Liked

Respect is something that is earned, in order to get it one must give it. While that might not always be the case, as an instructor one has to keep that in mind at all times.

Unprepared students

Many students do and will continue to come to class unprepared, not having so much as a pen to sign the attendance sheet. I would like to know what are some more strategies an instructor can give to better help prepare these type of students?

Late assisgnments

What are some of the other ways instructor's can let students know that late assignments and work is unacceptable outside of docking points off?

Yes I am stressed

I am a mother of two. A 7month old and a six year old. My husband has also gone back to school. I am having a rough time managing my time. I have no time at home to work on my lesson plans and when I get to work I am doing paperwork and helping students. Finding the time to work on lesson plans is just not there and I am very frustrated

Just another thing to organize

Stress should be dealt with just like any other task a teacher has in their busy day. You prepare lecture, demonstrations, grading, ect.. Why not throw stress management in the mix?!

Stress Indeed

I, like most, live with stress. I can relate to all of the sources mentioned in this section. I find that simple meditation (of any kind) can help you stay focused, as well as give you a break from reality.

Friendship vs. Caring

I think sometimes there is a fine line between friendship between a student and educator, and just caring. You want to make it comfortable enough for a student to reach out to you and approach you with a problem that may be effecting their attendance and studies. As the educator you want to show concern and caring, and also to perhaps follow up on a personal level. Can this be construed as friendship or do you think it's all in the approach?

Use of cell phones

Sometimes students may have the need to use the phone while they are in class I do not allow students to use the phone in the classroom but I tell them that if they need to use their phone they can go outside the classroom and use it. They can come back to class after they finish I do not necessarily see anything wrong with it. I would appreciate any ideas about possible negative consequences of this policy I have. Thanks
