Large Classes

Im in need of some suggestions for keeping large groups focused and engaged in what I am teaching them.

Saying NO

Learning to say no is hard for me. I always want to help when someone needs it, even it means stressing me out. Finding a good balance of things I have to do and things I would want to do is what I need to work on.

Teaching something that you have not done before.

I come across a few times in my teaching career that we are covering materials that we have not done ourselves, but we need to instruct this information to the students. I research as much as I can and prepare an assignment that I can manage and instruct to the class and show that I do have some knowledge then none at all.

students wanting to cheat

I find that the student cheats when they have not prepared for the test. They were present for the review and they had the knowledge that a test was to be given, but still did not want to try.

Students that act like they know it all.

Trying to instruct students in class you will always come across a few students that know it or know more of the topic then you do. I always need a back-up plan with additional information that will again advance me over the students and the rest of the class to maintain my role as instructor in the class when the student at times wants to be looked upon.

How to deal with students that have a hard time reading.

I have students in my class that have a retention problem to read their skill books to prep for a text or even read up on what they are learning in the class.

learning to be a better instructor

it helped me to figure out why some students are the way they are and how to deal with it ,so that i can be a better instructor.it helps me ,and helps me to help my students better.

student attention

If I find that I am losing the attention of a student of students, I will pull out an Ice Breaker our something else that will catch their attention. It works!

Instructor mistakes

Sometimes it is difficult to stand back from a situation with a student. I try not to react too soon. Sometimes that can be challenging, but in the end, time away from a problem, can often difuse it.

A difficult student

There will always be a class that has a student that needs extra attention, or adds a dynamic to the class that is a challenge. I will always try to talk to the student to find out what is going on in their personal life first, then try to ask them what they could do to try and change things for the better.

Student behavior problems

I like to take the time to get to know the new class a little better. When a problem arises, I like to talk to the student one on one to try and resolve it. If anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear them.

Helping with student proficiencies

Whenever I have a student that is having a difficulty with a particular proficiency, I will spend extra time outside of class to help. This always seems to work. Does anyone have any other ideas that might be of help?

Course guidelines

I could say that I have a "1 size fits all" type of syllabus but some areas of my syllabus have specific items for different courses. For example: if you are taking the 6 weeks course then you must take etc etc... if you are taking the 12 weeks course then you must take etc etc.... If you are taking the 16 weeks course then you must take .... Having 3 different syllabus for the same course, same term just different starting and end dates makes it confusing and that is the reason why I have the 1 size fits all type of syllabus. Should I have 3 different syllabus or continue with my 1 size fits all? Let me know what you think.

Separating work from home

Even though I have taught my currently assigned classes several times, I still find myself spending excessive amounts of time at home reviewing and changing my presentations to the detriment of my home life. Is this a never ending event based on this profession?

Center of attention

Managing those students who want to be the center of attraction. They seem to have all of the answers but they are wrong answers. This had been a problem for my other students with the compliants, until I got a handle on this situation.

Professionalism

Instructors need to put the best effort forth on the first class meeting, lead by example and students will follow. Start the class off by introduction and asking each student to introduce themsleves. Expain the school policy and describe any special rules you will require from the students during the class. Show students the ways to improve their grades and participate better in class. Tell students about ATTITUDE !!!! Everyone has personel problems and when you come to class, leave your problems at the door, you will be able to collect them afterwards. Start everyday with a fresh attitude and you will see better learning and life. Now I have your attention lets proceed with the learning objectives for today.

Reducing student cheating

Assign student to different seating if possible, if not use odd and even test with same questions but different answer seclection. Essay form of questions are the best choice due to the fact that students cannot copy from each other. Also having students answer short essay questions make them bring back part of the lecture and apply it to real situations. Students who cheat are only hurting themselves, and give the story about now is a pratice , but who knows the next time will be at there job and their pay will be depend on the results of their effort. Once you have discovered a cheating student, ask him to stay after class and get him to addmit of his cheating, confront him one on one.Explain the loss of trust and make him feel guilty of cheating. Usually this will make student know you are aware and he will not repeat this action again in your class. Make student aware that you are required to follow the school policy and this will volate the Acdemic Intergry policy.

Attention of inattentive students

To bring all students into the lesson, you first need to get the attention of the slackers from the rear of the class. Explain that we are now going to use the tools of the trade, and give a short explaination of the proper way to use the tools. Now get all student using the tools and continue showing them some of the neat tricks and fance work that these special tools will do. Assign special projects for all students and have them each pick out what they will present to the rest of the class. Remind the inattentive ones that this is a large part of they grade and since they missed some of lecture you will be available after class to help clear up any missed parts.

control student behavior during class

Expain to all students that everyone paid to take this course and interruptions cheat other students. We suggest that open disscusion of question as long as there are relievent to the course topic, we will answer all questions, some many need to wait until we are further into the presentation. This is done because we will cover these questions during ythe presentation. Envolve students bye asking questions on material presented within the last 5 minutes of lecture. Always call student by his name and walk around the class area to keep others from having side conversation, with the people aside of them. Engage student bye having them do an excersize which gets them up from their seats, which will cut down on the ones not involved and tending to sleep. This will make each student move around the class room and get them interatvite with each other
