Closed Questions to Begin a Literature Course

I am an English instructor and when I teach literature courses I often begin the class by asking students to provide some basic information about the text that we are scheduled to discuss that day. For example, if my class is set to talk about a short story, I will ask who the characters are and where the story is set. Would these be considered "closed questions"?

I think a good way to start with your new class is giving a non-graded quizz and discuss it with them the results. With this, you will show them that you worry if they learn or not, that you want to know their skills and knowledge.

I think a good way to keep students with you during lecture day is sharing with them videos and documentaries, of course updated. Inclusive, adding these links to the presentations will be more exiting for them. You will have a great class participation as an outcome of this.

Before each class, check for an operating PC and projector, internet if needed, access to the school server, markers for the wipe-board, temperature, lighting, etc. and call in any issues beforehand, especially for a later PM class when repair staff may be leaving.

Seating in the classroom should be arranged so all eyes are on the instructor and the instructor is able to individually address students at their prescribed seats.

Students will often focus their attention on the negatives and what the barriers are to being successful. Leading them into how they can overcome those barriers starts to turn their thoughts into a positive direction.

Active Learning

I have found it, very successful for the students, when active learning tools are implemented in the classroom. They are more acceptable to learning while actually participating on activities that focus on the main objectives of class. Lesson plans

I'm 50/50 on lesson plans being a must. I think they are fantastic and a must for someone starting a class for the first time. I am at the point now that I have taught the same class roughly 4 or 5 times. I find that I don't need them. I know all the material verbatim and have the stories to interweave with them.
