Organizing student learning groups

I have used student learning groups for projects in the past. I find that students at first dislike group work because they fear that not all members will do their fair share. I allow the students to pick their own group members, assign a project that easily breaks down into equal parts for the number of students in the group and allow the students to "grade each other" by writing what each member of their group completed for the overall project. I found that once I put these things into place I had far less issues with the learning groups in my classes. Students want to know that everyone gets the grade they deserve and don't want one student doing all the work while the other members get the same grade.

Student difficulties

Thw Instructor should talk with the students as to their disability. Define and brainstorm ideas that have helped the student in the past. This will rid the frustration of the student and help the Instructor to help the student.

Learning disabilities

Students have learning difficulities in verious areas of their educational career. These difficulities need to identify these disabilities and show the student how to cope with them to acheive their goals for education.

Student groups

Putting students in group gives a unity to the class. They can use the knowledge of the other students to learn when the Instructor is unable to define the material.

Moving around the room

Walking around the room not only includes the students in your lecture but will keep their attention on you. Students do not want to get caught doing other things when lecture is going on.

Use of entire classroom/moving around the room

I like the idea of using charts and other instructional tools to draw the students attention to another part of the room. However, I have a colleague who is known to have multiple technological things going on in the classroom at the same time. It is common for powerpoint slides to be shown on one wall, an overhead going on another wall, the whiteboard being used with notes all at the same time. It is good to use different areas of the classroom, but it is not good to try to use them all at the same time. The feedback I often get from students about this instructor is that they have no idea where they should be focusing their attention at any given moment. It causes them to miss information, become confused, and feel frustration. I think you need to use various parts of the classroom as "action zones". I just caution the simultaneous use of them.

Ive noticed many students are tired.it is important to motivate with hands on labs and frequent breaks.

Goal setting and Instructional objectives

Goals and objectives have to be clear for all students is such a reality. Students are looking for the main attraction upon entering a classroom. If these are clear, it has such a dramatic lasting effect and students generally do much better and look forward to coming to your class.

Proximity

With accelerated learners it's important to move around and even join groups for short periods of time. This helps redirect and raises the comfort level of the less confident student. I enjoy hearing and participating in student discussion on an equal level.

Professionalism

I enjoyed this 1st session "developing as an Instructor" and the section on professionalism. It is especially true upon entering a classroom with proper attire and subject matter knowledge. The student certainly observe this and pay close attention to this as well. They also make comments about your professionalism and subject matter as well to other students. Excellent area of interest and I will continue.

Still Learning

I often tell my students something that was told to me many years ago. "The Best Way To Learn Is To Teach". I tell them that learning is a life long experience and I am always open about something I am unsure of. I will tell a student with a puzzling question, that I am not certain of the answer and I will get back to them asap. Most embrace this. But, be sure and get back to them in a timely fashion.

Teaching with language barriers

In the past taught in another state, and had students from africa, phillipines, china, korea, they needed a dictionary and instructions just to complete care plans and tests. It was difficult for them and they required some extra time to complete some tasks and then also to communicate with patients and staff. Julie

Moving Around

I enjoy moving around so that each student has eye contact from time to time. I feel I can see each student and be more sensitive to needs or questions or concerns they may be afraid to ask. It is working so far I am teaching 9th class with same material. Julie

I enjoy trying different delivery styles to motivate and encourage class participation. Because you need to connect with all of the students based on their individual learning styles.
