Content Relationship

Keeping the relationship of total class session content can allow the student to more clearly understand the associations that make up the sum total.

show & tell, tell & show

Hospitality & the workplace laws can get, well rather dull if all you do is lecture right out of the book & only do reading assignments. We break it up and make it more realistic - how it applies to the everyday workplace our students will soon be entering. TELL: Taking a short amount of time to go over the material at hand using the traditional powerpoint to underscore what the reading assignment in the textbook covered. SHOW: highlighting where in the real world this material comes into play - then handing it over to the students. the hands on students go online in the classroom, right on the projector, for all to view - letting the students decide what current event is applicable to the hospitality workplace laws - there is always something in the news. The students break into groups and write a quick report on the event, researching what laws appy to the establishment in the news. DO:

First Day

Striking the correct note by beibg prepared on the first day of class sets the tone for the rest of the term.

sequence

After getting the curicullim material from the faculty,it does help to change the sequence sometimes,if it's ok with the faculty.

Creating An Open Environment

Creating a classroom environment that is open to student input and discussion is critical to the learning process.

Remaining Technically Current...

Remaining technically current is an important aspect of teaching; but not just remaining current in ones' field, also remaining current with fields that support the instructor's area of teaching.

Motivating Adult Students

I teach in an online environment, and most of my students are adults (over the age of 25) who have chosen to return to school to further their education. Some of them act unconcerned about participating in class and submitting their assignments on time. Does anyone have any suggestions, tips, or other words of wisdom regarding how you get your students to participate in class activities?

knowing learning style for my students

I am teaching Medical Assistant program. So i am using Power point, explaining on the black board, showing some animations and videos. I am not using one method.

Student Learning Styles

How would one best appeal to all students learning styles efficiently and effectively simultaneously.

How to help students understand the need to critically think

I find that students in my classes want to know what is going to be on their tests and the answers they need to study. This takes the critical thinking aspect out of the equation. It does not help if someone else teaching the same subject will do this. It can also hurt class retention when the students want this and do not get it. Often they stop coming and do not seek or accept help. Students become overwhelmed by the amount of material they need to study in a short period of time which is what happens in excelerated learning programs. I have prepared a study guide of what they need to know about to pass the tests but some students are not satisfied with this. I also emphasize things by saying they need to know this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

student expectations

student expectations are a reality. Emphasis should be placed on students not the instructor.

Make Learning Fun

In order to keep learning fun, I think you must learn to engage your students in the process

Student Behavior In class

How many of you experience unprofessional student behaviors in your classrooM? How do you deel with this matter?

Seating, Music and Aroma In The Classroom

I love the ideas for seating arrangements, the togetherness feeling is welcoming for our school because we enter new students with previous students. Music can bring attention to long dry information such as legal issues. Aroma is a great idea, I will try cinnamon to encourage and orange to calm this term.

memorizing

it is good to help students memorize things through simulation

learning types

it is good to get all kinds of learning types intergrated into your class

prop use

using props is good for the learners, stimulates their ability to associate with the topic

asking questions

it is good to ask the students direct questions about the topic

MEETING THE CLASS FOR THE 1ST TIME

EXCITING. A GOOD SENSE OF THE STUDENTS AND WHAT THE EXPECTATIONS ARE.

DELIVERING COURSE CONTENT

TRYING TO DELIVER EVERY LITTLE DETAIL IS OVERWHELMING, BUT WILL BE MORE COMFORTABLE NEXT TIME TEACHING.
