Teaching to Learning Styles

It is important to remember that the way you teach is always in the students best interest as to the way they learn.

Motivating students who will not be motivated.

I find that almost each module there is one to four students that I get in my classes that are extremely difficult to motivate. I have had some students tell me that they were in school because they had be since they could not find a job. These students pick health care because there are more available jobs in this field. I strongly get the impression from some students that they are just there to take up space. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get these students motivated?

When I have a new class, I immediately work on learning all of the student names. I will sometimes make a chart of where they sit to refer to if the class is especially big. The other thing I do is try to associate something with their name. The quicker you learn their name, the better. It shows that you truly care about them and they respond better in kind.

Material

Well being a professional and having monthly periodicals coming to me would it be good to present those to my class when I would be the only one able to get that info, would it be giving them more info than the others in the school are getting. I fear doing that since I get very specific information to myself that few people are able to get that it would be inappropriate to do so.

Presenting class

As an instructor I am always interacting with my students on an individual basis. This helps me understand their learning style and find better ways to ensure that the class content is delivered in many different supportive ways.

Delivering Course Content

Instructors must use a dynamic approach to getting the imformation accros to the student. It is imparative to keep them interested and focused.

Meeting a class for the first time

When meeting a class for the first time, you must have all the necessary information ready for the students to make them feel comfortable in a learning enviorment.

Planning and Prepartion

The largest complaint I have received as a DOE is that the teacher are not organized. With proper planning and prepartion, this would nearly eliminate all complaints.

Developing as an instructor

I believe that all instructors should use and interactive method of teaching so that the they can learn from the students as well

Learning from Assessments

I like to give my students the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. I no longer hand out homework assignments until the end of class because I am frustrated with the students that have been brainwashed into thinking that effective "learning" and successfully completing a "homework" assignment, both produce the same results. In my opinion, homework is often a mindless "task" that students try to accomplish before the real learning takes place. I am trying to strike a balance between inspiring students to learn and assigning the appropriate amount of homework to validate a students success.

Length of assessments?

How much time should be spent assessing students? I am currently teaching 5 week term and am giving daily quizzes. I would like to give a weekly assessment that is more representative of a major exam. My concern, is that too much time would pass by the time a problem would be identified. What are your thoughts?

Taking a step back to move two steps forward

I am in class now that is challenging and very rewarding. My classroom consisted of a few students that are very intelligent, a few students struggling with the English language, a couple students with learning disabilities that have requested my assistance and a handful of students that are very disrupting to the class. The remaining few students are quiet and getting lost in the chaos. It didn't take long to recognize I needed help. The first quiz scores reinforced the sense of urgency and need for change. Half the class earned 100%, the other half were lucky if they scored 20%. I am a new instructor and have yet to get constructive feedback on my decision to restructure the classroom environment. I carefully paired up students with a partner and asked them to work together as a team. Every few days I changed the teams and solicited honest feedback from everyone. A couple weeks into the course, a death in the family forced me to cancel class the day before a midterm exam. Instead of complaining about the horrible timing of my family emergency, my students made the best of the situation and decided to review for the midterm without an instructor. Every student showed up to class and actively participated in the review session. In addition to their superior teamwork and positive attitude, they enforced my 10 minute break rule and were mindful of not disturbing other classes. However, I did choose to eliminate a few lecture topics in hopes of accomplishing the above results. What are your thoughts regarding my decision? With the little information you have, how would a more experienced instructor have handled this differently? Am I justified in my decision or did I make a rooky mistake?

And the Beat Goes On

During the learning period it is best to play soft music or what we call elevator music when students are learning. When students are in groups, we could speed up the beat a little because they neet the boost in brain waves. Towards the end of the class, the music should be low and slow for the review before we leave for the evening

Pay Attention To What You are Learning

I just made the mistake of answering a question before I read the whole question. Of course it was wrong; that just shows me why the students make little mistakes on questions I know they should know. I know how to fix this problem now

Overcoming a strong foreign accent

I have a lot of diversity in my dental assisting program. Where I have trouble is helping a student from another country, say Russia, Germany and Latin. Dental assistants are required to educate the patient and to deliver clear post operative instructions to their patients. I can barely understand the student when they are speaking and I am not sure how to coach them in 7 months to loose the accent so they can be better understood? Can anyone offer and suggestions?
