Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

accerated learning

listen to the students, each will have a different approach to better learning ability

Student Focused Instruction

Student focused instruction includes determining the learning styles of your students and using those styles to provide instruction. Instruction includes teaching and learning. These two require strategies in order to be most effective. What strategies do you find are most helpful in your experience?

Games

Playing games before a exam helps for review and makes everyone happy.

music

Students love music i allow it every Friday as a treat in the classroom.

Maximizing Retention Through Memory

I am going to word my conversations in an even more positive way to make sure they understand they can achieve the requirements at hand with absolute success.

Mapping How People Learn to the Classroom

Interpersonal: Exercise requires students to communicate with each other to find their group and arrange themselves Logical/Mathematical: there are specific rules/guidelines for the exercise. Students must figure out what order would be logical Spatial/visual: Students have the visual of their specific step. They must visualize and picture the list as complete as part of the process. Musical: Music playing that reflects the fast paced mood. Linguistic/Verbal: Students must communicate verbally in order to find their group and arrange themselves. Students must read their specific step. Intrapersonal: Students must reflect on how they handle stress in order to determine their opinion on how the steps should be ordered. Bodily kinesthetic: Students move around the room while seeking their group and ordering themselves physically.

Creating a Multi-sensory Learning Environment

I think that there were a plethora of ideas in this lesson. I think the most easily applied ideas for me were the visual suggestions. I like the idea of having the one side of the room devoted to new material, and the other side to review material. I recently attended an open house at my daughter's high school. The English teacher had quotes on pieces of white paper, all different fonts, around the upper perimeter of the room. The quotes ran the gamut of biblical, classic, political, and modern movie. I found the environment to be energizing and motivating.

Growing Yourself as a Learning Facilitator

I think that when you are more confident about the material you are teaching, you are likely to feel more capable of experimenting using new tools to facilitate learning. When preparing for a class when the topic is more "known," the time that would have been spent reading on the topic, can be devoted to preparing a new way to present the material.

Pygmalion Effect (self fullfilling prophecy)

How do you use the Pygmalion Effect (self fulfilling prophecy) in you class?

Debrief

What is your method for debriefing the daily activities/labs and how much time do you budget for that portion of your class?

Difficult Students

What is in your toolbox of techniques that helps you deal with difficult students so that their learning as well as the learning of their peers is not interrupted?

Environment

How do you prepare your environment so that it meets the needs of your learners and applies to lessons that you are facilitating?

Effective Assessments

I do tend to lean toward multiple choice questions, because my students will be taking this form of test for medical certification. I do at times give other varieties. Skills performance tests are more fact based and I must meet the guidlines set forth by our accreditors.

Student Learning Assessment

A very valuable instrument in helping students achieve their goals. This helps the instructor to keep all students focused on their goals and what additional instruction that maybe required for some.

Questioning as a Technique

I very much enjoy questioning by students. To me this opens up broader discussions related to course content and allows for the input of life experience to the discussion. Students relate to these experiences that are brought up and retain information.

Teaching Learning Styles

I especially like the beginning of the term to find out what different learning styles that are in my class. I ask every student what there preference is on learning, this feedback gives me a good perceception of what to expect from my class. This also helps me in planning my teaching strategies for the class.

Applying Formal Education Matter to Career Classes

When working with students that are in a career college setting I have found that a majority of them do not apply the same focus to general education matter (history, math, etc.) as they do to the subjects that they see will directly impact their career. In order to combat this issue, I have altered my teaching method, and to some extent, the subject matter in order to illustrate to the students that general education is nothing if not paramount in their career. The math skills that they will need will reflect their bottom line. The fact that without an understanding of the history of a specific ingredient (as this is in a culinary setting) you cannot truly appreciate or capitalize on the flavor of that ingredient. How economic times and trends will shape your business plan. What are your thoughts?

Positive Inforcement, Breeds Positive Reinforcement

If you expect your class to do well on their lessons, you have to speak positivity to them. Stay away from negative verbs.

Doing is Learning's Best Friend

The more the students do after a lecture or a video, the more they learn. I use all three learning styles in my classroom to make sure every student is getting something out of the lecture.
