Instructing Learners with Disabilities

In order to successfully instruct learners with disabilities, the instructor must first be aware of the disability and second, the instructor must be sure the the college provides the necessary equipment to accommodate the students who have disabilities.

Instructing Diverse Learners

When instructing diverse learners, instructors must be careful to tailor and modify materials and information to be covered in the classroom so that the students at the beginners level of learning can grasp the concept of the course. I've found that if it is simple enough for the beginners, then, I don't worry about if the intermediate and advanced students can get because 100 percent of the time, they do.

Monitoring Students

Students should be monitored from the first day of class and each day thereafter. This allows the instructor to determine if there are problems,etc. that are starting among students in the classroom. This will allow the instructor to intervene and resolve the problems before they get too far out of hand. Monitoring also allows the instructor to see the personalities, attitudes and behaviors of each student in the classroom.

Improving Your Communication Skills

We, as educators should know the importance of communicating in the classroom; whether it is during a lecture, explaination, or general conversation to one student or to the entire class. Our students are always paying attention to us; therefore, we should always be clear and concise when communicating with the students.

Do's and Don't for new instructor.

DO be in class before your students arrive. Say hello-o and smile as each student arrives.WErite your name and the course name on the board. After introducing yourself start your class with an ice breaker. Define your skills. Always mange your clasroom in a professional matter Never say this is my first time teaching. Never say because this is my first time are you my gennie pig. Never say I don't know without saying, but I will locate the answer and get back with you. Never appear confused. Never let the student control your classroom.

Learning Resource Activity

Every module I implement a learning resource group or individual project. These projects are designed to get the student familiar with collaborative type of research projects. Reasoning: In the field of medical insurance billing the student may be called to do a presentation on what you have learned from a workshop or seminar. This will help the student practice the following skills: • Teamwork • Organizational skills • Delegacies of assignments • Leadership • Communications skills • Oral presentations • Preparing Power Point Presentations

Active Learning

I always like to incorporate different activities to engage the student in lesson. The most recent activity; understanding how to read an EOB, but rather than having them read a completed EOB, they had to complete the missing information. Student had to access the Medicare website and look up the fees and determine the insurance and patient portion and any adjustments to make. The goal here was to promote and apply different learning styles, engage students and encourage critical thinking. Also very important...setting clear expectations, 9 times out of 10 when you set good expectations, the results will be positive, which equals to zero disappointments.

How to build student repport without going to far.

Repport is so important in my opinion to getting the most out of our students. I can remember some of the teachers I've had in the past and their repport with the entire class was great !! I worked harder because I did not want to let them down. I felt a connection that pushed me to do the very best I could. Is eating lunch with the entire class after a final going to far ? What do you think going to far is? What is acceptable? Would love to hear what you all think.

Your Grade is Your Paycheck

When I first started teaching, a supervisor told me this theory that I could present to the students. "Think of me as your employer and your grade is your paycheck." By setting clear expectations, guidelines, and policies, the students will develop the understanding that everything they do is a reflection of how they will be once they get out in the workplace. If a student's goal is to get an A, they will only earn it if they communicate well, study appropriately, and communicate any concerns they have along the way in a professional manner. This is what an employer would expect, so I apply this tehory to every class to help prepare them for the real world.

How to Write Clear Objectives

When I first became an instructor, it was very difficult for me to write objectives on the board. They kept looking short and sweet--kind of like a "things to do" or grocery list. Thanks to the advice of a colleague, I have improved my objective writing. We use a resource called Bloom's Taxonomy. It gives a list of various terms (action words) that can be used to help write objectives. This resource has helped me tremendously, and I recommend it to any teacher who has had the same problem.

Leading by Example

Not only am I an instructor myself, I also supervise 6 other instructors in my department. I make it a personal and professional practice to be the best that I can possibly be. I stress the importance of achieving deadlines, communicating with students regularly, and staying in compliance. I feel that if I didn't do what I expect my staff to do, that they would eventually feel that they won't be held accountable for their mistakes. In addition, if one of my instructors comes to me for input or advice, then I provide it in a timely fashion. If their request is something beyond my scope, I am sure to refer them to the right party to get their issue addressed.
