How to be an effective manager

Leading by example

Employees see and hear more than you think. As a leader you need to lead by example. You need to show your team that doing the right thing, is the right thing. Regardless of your outcome, always make ethical choices.

ETHICAL BEHAVIOR IN THE CLASSROOM

Ethical behavior needs lots of attention and consistency. It is very easy for me to lie back after a few times of good behavior, like getting to work on time. I think I need to go back and reinforce these issues by reviewing educational programs or videos like this one. Another thing that came to my attention was the fact that if something is hard to explain, it may be avoided. It never crossed my mind.

Preventing Workplace Burnout

This activity reinforced it is okay to self care and step away from workplace stress when needed in order to combat burnout and fatigue. Taking care of me first will allow more long term successes.

Grey Area Decsionmaking

If decisions are difficult to make and hard to explain, taking time is a great action to take.  If an action will be difficult to explain to my peers or those in authority, then maybe I should refrain from the action because it may be unethical.

Moderate Stress is a resource

Sometimes we need stress to take action, but we get to teach ourselves some discipline on how to turn stress on and off. Generally speaking, we cannot control all causes of stress, but we should identify the triggers for each episode of stress and design their equivalent for something we can control for two reasons. One, to trigger some stress in moments we are lacking motivation; and two, to turn off the stress we can control in those moments that we are in situations we cannot control and are a source of bad stress.

Importance of being a positive role model

As a senior staff member, I realize how important it is to set a good example, especially for "newer" employees. I've learned that whether I like it or not, my seniority has an influence - if I exhibit positive work behaviours, others follow suit. If I complain, others complain.

Diesel/Welding skills and safety

Recently, I have deepened my understanding of modern diesel technology and welding techniques, which are crucial for preparing my students for careers in these fields. Learning about the latest advancements in diesel engine efficiency and the best practices in welding safety and technique has been particularly enlightening.

One major takeaway is the importance of hands-on training combined with theoretical knowledge. I plan to incorporate more practical, project-based learning into my curriculum, allowing students to work on real diesel engines and engage in welding projects. This approach will help them gain the practical skills necessary to troubleshoot and repair equipment effectively.… >>>

CA 103- Stress Management

Managing my level of stress has definitely been the focus the last few years and most importantly within the last year. With a lot of external stress that is out of my control, I've had to come to the realization that it is in fact something that I cannot manipulate the outcome of. By acknowledging this, it has helped tremendously. Another way I've helped cope with the stress is to take about 2 minutes during the day or whenever I am feeling overwhelmed and drop everything and just sit in silence or write down anything that I need to accomplish… >>>
