Managing Staff is an Up Close Proposition

Even the best employees sometime need support, direction, advice and commendation. In order for managers to deliver relevant and useful support, they need to know their staff, both as a team and individually, and treat each person as a "lifelong learner". To me that means providing staff with critiques as well as congratulations and ample opportunities for staff to participate in a wide continuum of training and support that is tailored to the team or individuals on the team. This approach should always include the team/individual in sharing what the need is for the training and hearing their feedback about the choice of training as well as their feedback on the efficacy and appropriateness of the training goals and content. If this process is conducted effectively and with the staff members active participation in the whole process, it can lead to greater staff satisfaction in their work, increased and more effective productivity, personal satisfaction with their job, and overall collegiality of the team.
